We are seeking Kirundi Over-the-Phone Interpreters (OPI) to support our USCIS contract. Kirundi, a Bantu language spoken in Burundi and neighboring countries (Tanzania, DR Congo, Rwanda), is a rare but important East African language often needed for asylum and immigration cases.
Responsibilities
- Provide real-time Kirundi English telephonic interpretation for USCIS interviews, hearings, and asylum proceedings.
- Interpret with accuracy, neutrality, and professionalism in sensitive immigration and legal contexts.
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with USCIS/DHS interpreter ethics standards.
- Handle both scheduled assignments and urgent/surge interpretation requests.
- Participate in compliance training, QA audits, and professional development.
Qualifications
- Native or near-native fluency in Kirundi and English (knowledge of Kinyarwanda is a plus, as they are closely related).
- 2+ years of professional interpreting experience (immigration, asylum, legal, NGO, medical, or community preferred).
- Strong understanding of interpreter ethics, confidentiality, and impartiality.
- Cultural familiarity with Burundian and East African contexts.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident eligible for Tier 3/Tier 5 federal clearance.
