POSITION: Kitchen Steward
REPORTS TO: Manager of Food Services
STATUS: Hourly – Non-Exempt – Part-Time
 
Overview: The Kitchen Steward works under the supervision of the Manager of Food Services, to ensure the proper maintenance of food service facilities and equipment. This role requires a high level of professionalism, commitment, and adaptability to uphold Coalition Values and maintain an environment of dignity, respect, and cooperation.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in food storage areas, including refrigerators, freezers, and dry storage shelves.
  • Thoroughly clean and sanitize dining hall tables, chairs, and countertops before and after meal service.
  • Wash, rinse, and sanitize dishes, utensils, pots, pans, and other food service equipment using manual, chemical, and/or mechanical methods.
  • Sweep, mop, and vacuum dining hall floors to maintain cleanliness and prevent slip hazards.
  • Empty and sanitize trash receptacles regularly to ensure a hygienic environment.
  • Assist in the assembly and packaging of meals for distribution, ensuring accurate portioning and presentation.
  • Unload food and non-food products to go into food pantry, coolers and freezers using safe lifting, pulling and pushing practices.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, cleaning, and sanitizing food service equipment, including ovens, steamers, ice machines, etc.
  • Clean and maintain various types of floors, walls, and surfaces, and ceiling vents.
  • Maintain assigned equipment in optimal condition dishwasher by clearing of food and other debris prior to and after use.
  • Collaborate with Food Services Cook on volunteer groups and individuals on safe food preparation, serving, and cleaning if needed.
  • Assist Food Services Cook with food preparation activities as needed, including chopping vegetables, preparing ingredients, and following recipes under the guidance of kitchen staff.
  • As needed, operate kitchen equipment such as mixers, slicers, and food processors safely and efficiently.
  • Receive and inspect incoming food deliveries to ensure quality and freshness under the guidance of the Food Services Cook.
  • Properly store food items in designated areas, adhering to FIFO (first in, first out) principles to minimize waste.
  • Report kitchen accidents or violations of food safety codes and procedures to Kitchen Services Manager or other Management staff promptly.
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Ensure donors fill out food donation forms to be provided to the Development team for processing.
  • Label each individual food donation that is perishable with date of reception once received from the donor.
Qualifications:
  • HS or GED preferred and at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Previous experience in cleaning and preventative maintenance preferred.
  • Bilingual candidates and veterans are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Ability to stand, sit, kneel, or crouch for extended periods.
  • Safely climb up and down ladders.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds for short periods of time.
Required Skills:

  • Follow instruction from supervisor and communicate effectively with team members and volunteers.
  • Safely use cleaning tools such as broom, mop and scrub brushes, and safely use common cleaning chemicals.

  • Demonstrate respect, compassion, and kindness towards others.
  • Dependable and punctual.
