Position Information

Position Title Lab Assistant--PTA Department (For Current second year SCC Students Only) FLSA Shift Day/Evening Supervisor Title Program Director/ACCE Location Yadkin Center Job Description - Summary

Lab assistants will preform skill checks on students. Lab assistants will meet with the instructor prior to class to be informed on what to look for in each skill checks.

  • Students must be enrolled in AT LEAST 6 credit hours to qualify for FWS Program

This is a part-time opportunity. Students may work up to 15 hours per week, depending on their unmet need on their FASFA.*

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Assist faculty during laboratory instruction.
  • Perform designated laboratory skill checks under the supervision of PTA faculty.
  • Meet with the supervising instructor prior to each laboratory session to review skill check expectations and grading criteria.
  • Provide tutoring and laboratory assistance to first-year students as assigned.
  • Reinforce proper laboratory procedures, safety practices, and professional behaviors.
  • Refer questions outside their assigned responsibilities to the supervising faculty member.
  • Laboratory assistants do not replace faculty instruction or evaluation and may perform only those duties assigned by the supervising instructor.

General Qualifications

Selection as a laboratory assistant is competitive and is considered a privilege. Placing an application does not guarantee you will be hired for the role. Students are selected by the PTA faculty based on a comprehensive review of factors that include, but are not limited to:

  • Academic performance and demonstrated mastery of PTA coursework.
  • Professionalism and ethical conduct.
  • Attendance and punctuality.
  • Reliability and dependability.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Timely completion of assignments and program responsibilities.
  • Ability to work independently while following faculty direction.
  • Ability to serve as a positive representative and mentor within the PTA Program.

Required Qualifications

Eligibility

To be considered for a laboratory assistant position, students must:

  • Be enrolled in their second year of the PTA Program.
  • Fill out an application
  • Meet all Federal Work-Study eligibility requirements.
  • Remain enrolled in the minimum credit hours as required by the Federal Work-Study Program.
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress and good standing within the PTA Program.

Preferred Qualifications

Laboratory assistants work under the supervision of the Program Director and ACCE. Selection as a laboratory assistant may be revoked at any time if the student no longer demonstrates the academic performance, professionalism, reliability, attendance, or conduct expected of the position.
