Job Title: Lab Assistant

Job Description

The Lab Assistant supports daily laboratory operations by accurately entering and managing specimen information, performing basic phlebotomy-related tasks, and assisting with documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR) system. This role combines data entry, transcription, and patient-focused support to ensure timely and accurate processing of samples and related medical information.

Responsibilities

  • Enter sample and specimen information accurately and efficiently into the EMR system.
  • Transcribe laboratory-related information and documentation with a high level of accuracy.
  • Type addendums and updates to patient and laboratory records as needed.
  • Perform or support phlebotomy-related tasks such as venipuncture, blood drawing, butterfly needle use, and specimen collection, as allowed by training and certification.
  • Assist with specimen processing activities, including handling and preparing samples and using equipment such as a centrifuge.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential patient information while following all applicable policies and procedures.
  • Provide professional and courteous customer service to patients, clinicians, and colleagues in a hospital laboratory setting.
  • Stay organized and manage multiple tasks and priorities independently with minimal supervision.
  • Follow laboratory protocols, safety procedures, and quality standards to support a safe and efficient work environment.
  • Collaborate with laboratory and clinical staff to ensure timely processing of specimens and accurate documentation.

Essential Skills

  • Proficiency in entering sample and specimen information into an EMR system.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and stay self-motivated in a fast-paced environment.
  • Accurate data entry skills and attention to detail when working with medical and patient information.
  • Typing and transcription skills for laboratory documentation and addendums.
  • Basic understanding of phlebotomy, venipuncture, and specimen collection processes.
  • Customer service skills for interacting with patients, clinical staff, and colleagues.
  • Availability to work full time in a hospital laboratory setting.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • CPT (Certified Phlebotomy Technician) license preferred.
  • Phlebotomy certification and experience with venipuncture, blood draws, and butterfly needle use are beneficial.
  • Experience in healthcare administration, particularly in a hospital or laboratory environment, is preferred.
  • Experience as a pathology transcriptionist or with laboratory transcription is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with specimen processing, blood drawing, and use of a centrifuge is helpful.
  • Active CNA license is acceptable but not required.
  • Background in medical data entry, handling patient information, and working in a clinical or laboratory setting is valuable.

Work Environment

This role is based in a hospital laboratory environment, working closely with clinical and laboratory professionals and handling patient specimens and related documentation. The position follows a Monday-Friday schedule, with a preferred shift of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and flexibility for 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. or 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The setting emphasizes safety, teamwork, and a healthy work environment where employees have a voice and feel a strong sense of belonging. Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $23.00/hr.
