Description:

Supervises the day-to-day operations of general, clinical laboratory area, moderately complex labs in Health Plazas. Works to standardize equipment, procedures and supplies across MercyOne NorthEast Iowa. Oversees the work of staff in assigned area. Adheres to MercyOne's performance expectations and performs all defined services and other related duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of MercyOne.

Performs functions of Medical Laboratory Technician

  • Performs clinical testing of laboratory specimens and reviews data for clinical correlation.
  • Performs quality control testing on all analyzers and analyzes in section of responsibility and interprets results.
  • Troubleshoots instrumentation and assays.
  • Serves as a resource on clinical laboratory testing.
  • Obtains proper specimens for testing; correctly labeling specimens per laboratory guidelines.

Supervises the day-to-day operations of department

  • Develops and updates staff schedules. Coordinates daily staffing according to budget and patient volumes. Reconciles time and attendance.
  • Serves as a resource to others in area of responsibility and expertise.
  • Troubleshoots and addresses questions from staff and others in completing daily activities.
  • Knowledgeable of regulatory requirements and assists with/coordinates the preparation for inspections by various regulatory agencies.
  • Develops and maintains procedure manuals.
  • Reviews departmental worksheets/daily logs.
  • Retains records for designated length of time.
  • Monitors level of and orders supplies for clients.
  • Calculates laboratory costs for TSI.

Provides input, facilitates changes, and maintains LIS for area of responsibility

  • Tests overlays/upgrades to system.
  • Assists in Building and maintains interface between instruments and LIS.
  • Maintains reference lab interfaces and QC/QI databases.
  • Serves as a resource to staff for LIS training/issues.
  • Understands and addresses impact of changes on other applications.

Tracks and reports data

  • Reports, reviews, and evaluates proficiency testing.
  • Investigates "out of range" reports, determines and documents corrective action and obtains pathology signature.
  • Oversees correlation studies on new or updated procedures.
  • Oversees corrected reports.
  • Provides feedback to staff and managers.

CQI

  • Develops, implements and monitors a Quality Improvement Plan that is reviewed and revised annually or as needed for CQI.
  • Responds to customer complaints within 24-48 hours.
  • Follows up on occurrence reports and takes immediate action to events of major consequences.
  • Documents and takes action within 24 hours on potentially compensable events (i.e., accidents, professional errors, etc.).
  • Documents and reports unsafe conditions.
  • Demonstrates compliance with all licensing, accrediting, certification, and/or legal requirements.

Communication/ leadership

  • Assures actions and decisions are consistent with the Mission, Vision and Values.
  • Works cooperatively with physicians, volunteers, employees and other MercyOne personnel.
  • Adapts current operations to the changing needs of consumers, families, physicians, colleagues and the community.
  • Keeps director or manager informed of programs, problems and issues.
  • Resolves problems independently as appropriate.
  • Communicates to staff all relevant information; holds periodic communication meetings and ensures records are kept.
  • Adheres to existing policies and procedures; assists in developing policies and procedures that are consistent with regulating agency guidelines and MercyOne mission and philosophy.
  • Promotes and adheres to the elements of the Corporate Compliance Program.
  • Manages change by educating team members to accept and acknowledge change, leading others through it with enthusiasm.
  • Actively listens and often helps others to deal with stress and stressful situations.

Team Development

  • Assists Director and Human Resources in selecting competent staff at a level consistent with need, in a timely manner.
  • Ensures new employees are oriented to department and job and that initial competency assessment is complete and documented.
  • Delivers objective and honest feedback, giving credit when deserved.
  • Completes annual competency assessments on or before due date.
  • Administers and documents disciplinary action as appropriate.
  • Encourages staff development (i.e., assesses needs, assists in development of education plan).
  • Facilitates team discussion toward positive solutions.
  • Maintains an acceptable turnover rate.
  • Models cultural beliefs.

Budgeting

  • Prepares/contributes to an annual budget that is congruent with goals and objectives.
  • Maintains acceptable level of expenditures consistent with budgeted amounts.
  • Adjusts utilization of staff and materials to actual workload.
  • Makes decisions about and effectively coordinates the use of all resources (people, materials, time) to achieve maximum productivity.

Adheres to all safety, infection control and colleague health policies and procedures.

  • Attends required safety programs.
  • Appropriately and consistently uses the personal protective equipment required of the job.
  • Knows and can demonstrate departmental emergency procedures for fire, disaster and other emergency situations.
  • Reports and removes unsafe equipment/furniture.
  • Asks for assistance when needed to assure safety for all involved.
  • Maintains a safe working environment and practices safe working habits.

State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health's Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.

General Requirements:

  • Medical Laboratory Technician or related field
  • Minimum of 4 years laboratory experience
  • Previous leadership experience preferred
  • Certified Medical Laboratory Technician by ASCP
  • Mandatory Reporter
