Position Description

At Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a world-renowned research institution, we are seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to join our AAALAC-accredited animal facility. This role plays a vital part in supporting the daily care and well-being of research animals-including mice, rats, and frogs-while ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare. You will contribute directly to the smooth operation of the facility and to scientific research that drives meaningful discoveries.

Position Responsibilities

• Demonstrate proficiency and be available to perform all duties required for the Cage Washer position.
• Examine animals for signs of illness and administer treatments according to instructions.
• Transfer animals between cages and tanks as needed.
• Monitor controls regulating temperature and humidity in animal quarters.
• Record data according to instructions, including genealogy, diet, weight, medications, and food intake.
• Provide general animal nursing and laboratory assistance to scientific staff and the Animal Facility Manager.
• Feed, water, and care for research animals according to established schedules.
• Assist Animal Facility Supervisors with transgenic rodent colony management, including modified barrier housing, colony health management, and maintenance of mouse lines.
• Provide pre- and post-operative care to animals, maintain health records, and perform minor treatments as necessary.
• Work occasional weekends and holidays as required.

Position Requirements

• Education: Associate's degree in a scientific discipline.
• Experience: Six months of relevant work experience preferred but not required.
• Other:
• ALAT certification preferred but not required.
• Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain focus on routine tasks.
• Skilled in operating cage washers, autoclaves, and other disinfecting/sterilizing equipment.
• Comfortable working with or around laboratory animals.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality control.
• Effective time management skills.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
