Job Description LABORATORY TECHNICIAN SUMMARY The Laboratory Technician provides essential support for the daily operations of a clinical laboratory. This role is responsible for specimen accessioning, sample preparation, moderate complexity testing, instrument maintenance, and general laboratory support within Chemistry, Hematology, and Coagulation departments. The Lab Technician helps maintain an organized, efficient, and compliant laboratory environment while supporting quality patient care.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in a science-related field preferred. Previous clinical laboratory experience preferred. Basic understanding of laboratory operations and safety procedures. Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy. Excellent organizational and communication skills. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. Ability to follow standardized procedures and maintain confidentiality. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Adherence to Policies and Procedures Follow all laboratory policies, procedures, and safety protocols. Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations. Demonstrate professionalism and ethical conduct at all times. Consistently wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Specimen Accessioning and Processing Receive, verify, label, and accession patient specimens accurately. Ensure proper specimen handling, storage, and routing. Identify and resolve specimen discrepancies according to laboratory procedures. Prepare specimens for testing and analysis. Laboratory Operations Perform moderate complexity testing under the supervision of laboratory leadership. Assist with daily operations in Chemistry, Hematology, and Coagulation departments. Load and unload specimens onto laboratory analyzers. Perform waived testing as assigned. Conduct daily startup and shutdown procedures for laboratory instruments. Perform routine instrument maintenance and basic troubleshooting. Follow standardized testing procedures and quality control protocols. Quality Assurance and Compliance Participate in quality assurance and quality control activities. Maintain accurate documentation, maintenance logs, and temperature logs. Monitor reagent and supply inventory, including expiration dates. Assist with regulatory compliance and accreditation requirements. Dispose of laboratory waste and specimens according to established protocols. Laboratory Maintenance and Organization Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas and equipment. Assist with inventory management and supply ordering. Ensure laboratory workspaces remain stocked and operational. Collaboration and Communication Communicate effectively with laboratory staff, leadership, and other departments. Report workflow concerns, instrument issues, or testing problems to the Lab Manager or Shift Lead. Assist in training new laboratory personnel as assigned. Maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues to support efficient workflow. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to pass standardized color vision testing. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds. Strong hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity. Ability to stand and work in a laboratory environment for extended periods. Ability to wear laboratory PPE for extended periods during shifts. WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is primarily performed in a clinical laboratory setting. Frequent exposure to biological specimens, including blood, urine, and other bodily fluids. Exposure to laboratory chemicals and equipment consistent with a clinical laboratory environment. COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
