The Lab Technician tests production batches using defined methods, interprets results and historical data, and ensures all products meet or exceed customer quality requirements. This role provides clear instructions to production personnel for batch adjustments, supports the overall efficiency and safety of the laboratory, and maintains accurate documentation and records. The technician works with minimal supervision, follows standard technical procedures, and contributes to continuous improvement of quality processes and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Test production batches according to specific written testing methods and document all results accurately.
• Interpret test results and historical data to ensure products meet or exceed customer quality requirements.
• Approve batches only after confirming all tests are completed and results meet specifications before the next production step.
• Enter all batch data into the electronic batch records system in a timely and accurate manner.
• Generate required paperwork and documentation in accordance with customer specifications.
• Gather and prepare customer samples and ship them as required.
• Follow all standard technical procedures while exercising sound judgment and initiative to complete assigned work with minimal supervision.
• Perform raw material testing as needed, following appropriate test methods and filing related paperwork.
• Gather, stock, and manage the product retain area to ensure proper organization and traceability.
• Use appropriate computer systems and laboratory software to support effective and efficient testing of products.
• Determine the disposition of non-compliant finished goods, including first case and last case evaluations.
• Place non-conforming materials on hold when necessary and ensure proper documentation of these holds.
• Support quality management systems and safety systems by following established policies, procedures, and standards.
• Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies, restock items when received, and request additional supplies when levels are low.
• Maintain laboratory housekeeping standards and clean all test equipment regularly to ensure a safe and orderly work area.
• Adhere to all safety requirements and protocols associated with laboratory and manufacturing operations.
• Identify and communicate product issues to other departments, including production and quality, as needed.
• Review batch slips for completeness and accuracy before processing or approval.
• Create, maintain, and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the Quality Department to meet internal and external requirements.
• Assist in training new or less-experienced lab technicians as needed, sharing best practices and ensuring consistent testing methods.
• Perform wet chemistry, titration, pH measurements, and other laboratory techniques as required by testing protocols.
• Operate and maintain laboratory instruments such as viscometers, spectrometers, and gas chromatographs (GC) in accordance with SOPs.
• Conduct inspections and quality control checks in alignment with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and quality control (QC) standards.
• Collaborate closely with the production team and other lab staff to support a team-oriented, flexible work environment.

Essential Skills

• At least 1 year of laboratory-based experience performing material testing.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Ability to see color with or without reasonable accommodation, to support accurate product evaluation.
• Willingness to work overtime with or without reasonable accommodation when business needs require.
• Experience with quality control testing in a laboratory or manufacturing environment.
• Ability to follow written testing methods and standard operating procedures accurately.
• Proficiency in recording data and entering information into electronic batch record systems.
• Experience performing wet chemistry techniques, including titration and pH measurements.
• Ability to operate laboratory instruments such as viscometers and spectrometers.
• Familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and quality control (QC) processes.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy in testing, documentation, and batch approval.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while exercising good judgment and initiative.
• Effective communication skills to relay product issues and testing results to production and other departments.
• Basic computer skills and ability to use laboratory-related software and systems.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working in a chemistry or paint-related laboratory environment.
• Hands-on experience with gas chromatography (GC) or similar analytical instruments.
• Background in inspection activities within a quality control or quality assurance setting.
• Familiarity with laboratory quality systems and documentation practices.
• Experience creating, maintaining, and updating standard operating procedures (SOPs) for quality departments.
• Previous involvement in training or mentoring other laboratory technicians.
• Comfort working in a production-adjacent environment where multiple tasks and responsibilities are shared across the team.
• Interest in long-term career growth within a large, multi-location organization.
• Strong organizational skills for managing product retains, lab supplies, and documentation.

Work Environment

The laboratory is located within a paint manufacturing facility, where the technician works closely with production operations. The environment can be dusty and dirty at times, and the technician should be comfortable working around paint and not be concerned about occasionally getting paint on clothing or personal protective equipment. The role involves working alongside one other technician on the shift and maintaining constant communication with the production team to support ongoing operations. The lab team maintains a laid-back yet highly collaborative culture, where team members wear multiple hats, support one another, and step in where needed to keep processes running smoothly. The work follows established safety requirements, Good Manufacturing Practices, and quality systems, and involves regular use of laboratory instruments such as viscometers, spectrometers, and gas chromatographs, as well as wet chemistry and inspection tools. Appropriate safety gear and protective clothing are used as required by the manufacturing and laboratory environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Baltimore, MD.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $27.30 - $27.30/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
