Job Title: Lab Technician

Job Description

This Lab Technician role focuses on performing routine analytical testing on crude oil, base oils, lube oils, and petrochemical products in a high-volume laboratory environment. You will operate and interpret results from GC and ICP instruments, accurately document data in a LIMS system, and support quality control processes to ensure reliable and timely test results. The position requires strict adherence to safety protocols, standard operating procedures, and shift work in an oil and gas laboratory setting.

Responsibilities

  • Run routine analytical tests on crude oil, base oils, lube oils, and petrochemical samples according to established methods and standard operating procedures.
  • Set up, operate, and troubleshoot GC (Gas Chromatography) and ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma) instruments to perform required analyses.
  • Interpret and validate results from GC and ICP tests, ensuring accuracy and consistency with quality control standards.
  • Accurately input test data and results into the laboratory LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) in a timely manner.
  • Perform wet chemistry analyses, including titrations and distillations, as required for petroleum and petrochemical testing.
  • Follow all laboratory safety protocols and standard operating procedures to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Maintain laboratory inventory by monitoring supplies, reagents, and consumables, and assist with ordering and restocking as needed.
  • Support quality control activities by following established quality assurance guidelines and documenting any deviations or issues.
  • Work effectively within a shift schedule, remaining on your feet for extended periods while performing laboratory tasks.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure smooth handoffs between shifts and consistent communication of test status and results.

Essential Skills

  • A.S. or B.S. degree in Chemistry, Biology, or a related field.
  • Completion of at least one in-person laboratory course, ideally in chemistry.
  • 2-5 years of hands-on experience working with ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma) instrumentation.
  • Experience working with octane engines in a laboratory or testing environment.
  • Prior experience using a LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) for data entry and results management.
  • Experience in the petroleum industry, including work with crude oil, petrochemical products, titrations, and distillations.
  • Proficiency in wet chemistry techniques relevant to quality control testing.
  • Ability to follow detailed laboratory SOPs and safety protocols consistently.
  • Capability and willingness to work 12-hour shifts and remain on your feet for extended periods.
  • Comfort working in an oil and gas laboratory environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in analytical testing and data entry.
  • Ability to interpret analytical data from GC and ICP instruments and identify anomalies.
  • Good organizational skills to manage multiple tests, samples, and priorities within a shift.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with team members across different shifts.
  • Adaptability to shift work and rotating day/night schedules.
  • Commitment to maintaining high standards of quality and safety in a laboratory setting.

Work Environment

This position is based in an oil and gas laboratory that operates on a rotating shift schedule. The role follows a 2-3-3-2 pattern, with 12-hour shifts: two weeks on a 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. schedule, followed by two weeks on a 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. schedule. You will spend much of the shift on your feet performing laboratory tasks and working with instruments such as GC and ICP, as well as conducting wet chemistry tests including titrations and distillations. The environment emphasizes strict adherence to safety protocols, proper handling of petroleum and petrochemical samples, and consistent use of laboratory standard operating procedures. Dress typically aligns with a laboratory and industrial setting, including appropriate lab attire and personal protective equipment as required by safety guidelines.
