Job Description



1. Patient and Staff
Safety:

  • Recognizes the importance of patient/staff
    safety precautions as it relates to specific department and area of
    responsibility.
  • Consistently utilizes precautions and follows
    appropriate procedures to enhance patient/staff safety in daily
    operations.
  • Identifies and reports any potentially
    dangerous situations to manager which could cause medical error and / or
    patient or staff harm.
  • Immediately takes action, where appropriate,
    to minimize the risk of injury. Where appropriate to staff member’s
    responsibilities, reports errors, when these occur, to supervisor and on
    an Occurrence Report. Participates, when appropriate, in Root Cause
    Analyses and/or other efforts to reduce risk of medical error and / or
    patient or staff harm.


2. Performance Improvement:
  • Participates in performance / customer service
    improvement; actively assists in improving performance based on results
    obtained from customer satisfaction / PI activities.
  • Where appropriate, participates in Performance
    Improvement activities, including team membership.


3. Testing Procedures
  • Logs in and performs both routine and advanced
    test procedures under on-site supervision of a supervisor.
  • Reviews results recognizing the
    interdependency of tests and the conditions that affect test results.
  • Reports test results to authorized persons.
  • Performs procedure troubleshooting techniques
    as required.


4. Quality Control
  • Performs, records and evaluates appropriate
    Quality Control.
  • Investigates abnormal Quality Control results
    as appropriate.


5. Instrument Maintenance
  • Reads and records instrument parameters as
    part of maintenance and quality control.
  • Performs preventative maintenance procedures
    on instruments.
  • Performs advanced instrument troubleshooting
    as required.


6. Inventory
  • Receives and records inventory shipments as
    needed.
  • Documents and records lot numbers and volumes
    as appropriate.
  • Reports low inventory levels to supervisory
    staff as appropriate.


7.  Communication
  • Informs Supervisory staff of anything falling
    outside of standard policy or procedure.
  • Communicates with laboratory staff, laboratory
    management, pathologists, patients, hospital personnel, physicians and
    their offices requiring courtesy and tact.
  • Performs duties in a professional manner at
    all times.


8.  Schedule/Supervision
  • Responds promptly to emergency calls/disaster plan.
  • Works
    weekends and holidays as part of a rotating schedule.
  • Assists
    in training new staff.
  • Functions
    a shift supervisor in the absence of supervisor or assistant supervisor.
  • Makes
    reasonable effort to report to work during inclement weather.


9. Quality
Assurance:
  • Maintains personal professional competency
    through in-service and meeting attendance.
  • Maintains a safe, orderly working environment;
    maintains compliance with OSHA regulations.
  • Ensures that Joint Commission, College of American Pathologist, NYS Dept of
    Health and F.D.A. standards are  
    adhered to.
  • Ensures that PMHC corporate compliance
    policies are adhered to.
  • Adheres to hospital and department mission
    statements, policies and procedures.


10. Continuing Education:
  • Attends all hospital or departmental
    in-services.
  • Attends appropriate seminars and conferences
    as necessary.
  • Adheres to NYS Dept of Education continuing
    education requirements.


11. Performs other duties
as assigned and requested.



Qualifications




  • Education/Training: 
    • B.S. degree in Medical Technology or a related
      science required with one (1) year of experience preferred or an

              A.S. degree in Medical
      Technology or a related science and ten (10) years of experience required.

    • Ability to read, write and communicate in English
      required.

  • Experience
    • Please refer to Education/Training for specific
      combination requirements.

  • Licensure,
    Registration or Certification:
    • NYS Dept of Education
      licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist.

    • ASCP certification
      preferred.
