Labor & Delivery Unit Nurse Manager

GENERAL SUMMARY/BASIC PURPOSE OF JOB:
The unit manager provides clinical leadership to a defined unit(s), and has 24 hour accountability for the unit(s); serves as a role model for professional practice and intermittently takes charge nurse responsibility and patient care load.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
1.0 Clinical
1.1 Oversees and promotes safe, quality driven nursing care of patients while serving as a clinical resource
1.2 Develops and maintains written, evidence-based policies and procedures to guide clinical practice in collaboration with the Director of Nursing and Nursing Education
1.3 Assesses and facilitates patient/caregiver interaction and relationships
1.4 Engages in joint collaborative practice with physicians and other interdisciplinary team members
2.0 Staff development
2.1 Participates in the interview and hiring process of qualified candidates for employment
2.2 Ensures caregiver education needs are met in collaboration with Nursing Education and unit specific standards
2.3 Serves as a role model and mentor for all caregivers in the area of professionalism and clinical practice
2.4 Participates and monitors corrective action as needed for performance below standards in collaboration with nursing leadership and human resources
2.5 Ensures completion of annual performance appraisals.
3.0 Unit Management
3.1 Participates in the development of unit goals with the Director of Nursing and
staff. Monitors progress towards identified goals, and implements change processes required to meet identified goals
3.2 Works collaboratively with the Director of Nursing in developing the annual budget as well as reviewing and reporting on the monthly variances
3.3 Exercises and promotes fiscal responsibility and provides oversight in unit activities
3.4 Monitors attendance patterns in accordance with the standards of Sinai
Health System time and attendance policy
3.5 Demonstrates knowledge of and assures caregiver compliance with regulatory standards and maintains survey readiness
3.6 Facilitates and supports open communication with caregivers through
ongoing verbal and written communication
3.6 b Demonstrates the ability to develop and facilitate formal unit meetings and shift huddles
3.7 Demonstrates the ability to facilitate effective communication with the Director of Nursing
3.8 Demonstrates 24/7 accountability and accessibility for clinical, administrative and leadership support of the unit(s)
3.9 Demonstrates knowledge of, and manages human resources within the scope of labor laws
3.10 Exemplifies excellence in service with internal and external customs as evident by the ability to effectively respond to reported concerns and develop sustainable strategies for improvement
3.11 Demonstrates the ability to recognize and address identified breeches in safety/quality and report them appropriately
3.12 Demonstrates the ability to integrate technology into patient care processes and use information systems to support business decisions
4.0 Education/Research
4.1 Provides and supports positive educational experiences for students and residents
4.2 Facilitates and supports unit, hospital and system based performance improvement plans in collaboration with System Director
4.3 Performs other duties as assigned
5.0 Personal and Professional Accountability
5.1 Manages personal growth and development through education advancement, continuing education, career planning and annual self-assessment and actions plans
5.2 Practices ethical behavior including practice that supports nursing standards and scopes of practice
5.3 Involved in professional associations including membership that facilitates networking and professional development
5.4 Achieves certification in an appropriate field/specialty
5.5 Participates in a hospital committee
MINIMUM EDUCATION:
Registered Nurse licensed in the State of Illinois
MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years' experience in a Clinical Nursing leadership position.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
Good interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to organize, mentor and lead others.
Ability to function independently within the scope of clinical practice
REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATIONS:
Registered Nurse licensed in the State of Illinois or new graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with license pending in State of Illinois.
