Under supervision, performs basic laboratory techniques, assists in routine laboratory processes, prepares and analyzes environmental, fuels, and process samples. Performs sampling of potable water, wastewater, surface water, ground water, and other related sample matrices. Performs other related activities that support the organization''s effort to excel in environmental stewardship. Job requires basic knowledge of JEA and regulatory standard operating processes for laboratory techniques, environmental sampling, safety practices and procedures, to sufficiently perform a limited range of routine technical tasks. Specific standard operating procedures that are provided require some judgment in locating and selecting the most appropriate methods, techniques and procedures, rearranging work sequences in specific cases. Personnel assist in solving routine problems. Work is reviewed in progress and upon completion for accuracy and completion in following established procedures and directions. Regular contact with internal and external customers is required to obtain, clarify or provide facts and information. May be required to work a variety of non-standard hours and/or be on call twenty-four (24) hours-a-day, seven (7) days-a-week to provide continuous customer service.

  • Assists personnel with basic laboratory analysis or processes including glassware washing and preparation tasks.
  • Conducts routine general wet chemistry analyses (i.e. Nutrient digestions, organic extractions, carbonaceous biological oxygen demand (CBOD), total organic carbon (TOC), etc.) and field sampling.
  • Prepares and analyzes fuel oils, lubrication oils, solid fuels, limestone, and various ash products.
  • Uses variety of field sampling equipment: compositors, dip-poles, and peristaltic pumps.
  • Collects and tests field samples of water supplies and discharges for chlorine, pH, and other chemical and bacteriological content.
  • Records and analyzes results from various water supply and discharge tests.
  • Implements, organizes and maintains computer records and document files of sampling, testing and analysis results.
  • Attends safety meetings.
  • Operates standard office equipment and uses required software applications, including Microsoft Office Suite and Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Performs other job-related work as assigned.

OPEN REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Biology, Natural Sciences, or a related field.

  • OR-

Four (4) year combination of education, training and experience that must include successful completion of sixteen (16) semester hours of Chemistry, Biology, Natural Sciences or related field at college level.

PROMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

All regular JEA employees who have successfully served in the classification of Laboratory Technician for a minimum of two (2) years and meet the open requirements may apply.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: A valid driver''s license is required prior to employment and must be maintained during employment in this classification.

Note: The probationary period for this class is twelve (12) months.
