Job Overview
Sigma Systems is seeking a Laboratory Assistant to support a Parasitology Research team focused on animal health discovery. This position will assist with insect rearing, laboratory maintenance, reagent preparation, research activities, and internal drug screening.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on laboratory experience, particularly with insect or ectoparasite colonies, and be comfortable performing repetitive laboratory tasks independently while following strict safety, quality, and scientific standards.
Key Responsibilities
Support daily laboratory operations for Animal Health Discovery research activities.
Assist with insect rearing and insect husbandry activities.
Maintain insect or ectoparasite colonies according to established procedures.
Support parasitology research, including internal drug screening and assay activities.
Prepare reagents and laboratory materials as needed.
Perform laboratory cleaning and maintain an organized work environment.
Stock laboratory consumables and monitor inventory.
Track laboratory equipment, maintenance schedules, and supplies.
Place supply orders when needed.
Receive, store, and dispose of laboratory materials according to established procedures.
Perform specific steps of research assays and other laboratory procedures.
Complete assigned tasks independently and efficiently after training.
Follow all applicable laboratory safety protocols, regulatory requirements, and Good Scientific Practice standards.
Learn and operate basic laboratory automation software and equipment.
Occasionally operate automated laboratory equipment independently with minimal support.
Required Qualifications
2+ years of laboratory experience in a research company or academic institution.
1+ year of experience working in a vivarium or insectary maintaining insect or ectoparasite colonies.
Hands-on experience with insect rearing and maintenance.
College coursework in Biology or an equivalent field.
Experience performing laboratory activities using aseptic technique.
Strong attention to detail and a reliable approach to laboratory work.
Ability to perform repetitive tasks accurately and consistently.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision after training.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively within a diverse, collaborative research team.
Fluency in English.
