Position Description

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

As a nationally recognized industry leader in wastewater management, the City of Fresno Wastewater Management Division provides high-quality wastewater collection, treatment, and reclamation services in a professional and competitive manner in order to preserve the environment and ensure the health, safety, and economic vitality of the community. Currently, The City of Fresno Wastewater Management Division is recruiting for a Laboratory Assistant. Under close supervision, incumbents assist in the laboratory by collecting samples, preparing for chemical and microbiological test procedures, maintaining and cleaning laboratory equipment, and may perform basic laboratory tests.

One vacancy currently exists in the Department of Public Utilities, Wastewater Management Division. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period for up to a maximum of two years at the Citys discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.

THE REQUIREMENTS

These are entrance requirements to the competitive examination and do not assure a place on the eligible list. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify.

TO QUALIFY, an applicant must have: Completion of nine semester units from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or a related field.

The following may be substituted for the required education:

One year of training and experience in an analytical laboratory.

OR

Possession of a valid Water Quality Analyst Certificate as issued by the American Water Works Association.

OR

Grade I Laboratory Technologist Certificate as issued by the California Water Environment Association.

CERTIFICATES MUST BE UPLOADED TO THE APPLICATION FOR VERIFICATION OF REQUIREMENT.

Possession of a valid California Drivers License may be required at time of appointment.

Additional Requirements:

Eligibles certified for consideration for this position will be required to successfully pass a Department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint process prior to employment with the City of Fresno.

SELECTION PROCESS:

The examination process may consist of the following:

WRITTEN EXAMINATION - 100%: A job related written examination may be administered, which may test a candidates knowledge, skills and abilities performing laboratory sampling and testing, quality control and assurance procedures, analysis, maintenance and operation of laboratory equipment, and other duties in relation to the position.

Candidates must achieve a passing score to qualify for the eligible list.

VETERAN'S PREFERENCE

Candidates applying for veterans preference are required to submit a copy of their DD214 with their application during the specified filing period. Qualified veterans who pass the examination will have five (5) points added to their final score.

DROP (Deferred Retirement Option Program):an optional, voluntary program that allows an employee to deposit retirement benefits in a special savings account within the Retirement System while continuing to work for the City of Fresno for up to 10 years. Participation minimum is age 50 and vested. Benefits include ownership of accumulated funds, compound interest earnings, and alternative distribution options.
