Job Summary:

The lab assistant performs duties that support the efficient workflow of the laboratory. Duties may include obtaining patient specimens, processing laboratory specimens, patient registration and/or performing CLIA waived patient testing within the laboratory.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Processes blood and nonblood patient specimens in a timely and accurate fashion.
  • Assists in specimen preparation, receipt, and transport of patient specimens.
  • Performs patient registration.
  • Provides phone support for patient care areas in a polite and supportive manner.
  • Maintains competency with hospital and laboratory information systems as needed to perform job duties.
  • Trains new team members and/or students in the department including any standard work processes applicable to the work area.

Education Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent from an accredited institute

Experience Required:

  • Medical terminology, typing and computer skills. Six months in a related field

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Indirect exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids and tissue, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medical preparations and other conditions common to a clinical environment.
  • Prolonged sitting and/or standing. Frequent walking bending, stooping, pushing, twisting and turning. Occasionally lifts 10 pounds or more of office related equipment or supplies. Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity in reaching, grasping and handling with repetitive use of hands and fingers in operating computer, calculator, telephone, copier, fax and similar office equipment. Ability to distinguish letters, numbers and symbols with normal range of vision and hearing and ability to communicate verbally and in writing. Work-related stress due to volume and time constraints. May require travel by vehicle to alternative locations.
