Job Summary and Qualifications The Laboratory Assistant provides specimen processing, clerical, and phlebotomy services for the Laboratory and Pathology in a timely, efficient, and courteous manner. The Laboratory Assistant demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients.
What are you doing in this role? • Answer telephones efficiently and courteously and transfer calls effectively. • Are familiar with medical terminology, basic computer skills, and specimen requirements. • Accession specimens and order tests in Meditech if necessary. • Receive specimens into computer and process them for in-house testing or referral testing. • Log specimens and file copy of each specimen. • Requisition sent to reference lab. • Will comply with universal precautions and adhere to safety standards and practices. • Perform phlebotomy and urine collection as needed. • Assist with Bone Marrow FNA and EBUS procedures. • Accession pathology specimens and prepare for send out, ensure the correct preservative is added, proper requisition for each specimen. • Ensure there are no lab orders before adding preservative. • File pathology slides and blocks and send slides and blocks to be requested hospital as needed. • Pick up daily specimens from the frozen room and dialysis specimens as needed. • Weekly clean the frozen section room and check expired reagents and stains. • Perform weekly eyewash station checks, histology, morgue, and frozen room. • Perform Cryostat monthly maintenance, monitor, and document daily required temperatures. • Check and change stains and reagents as needed or at least monthly. • Reconcile outstanding pathological specimens and orders daily. • Back up Processer Phlebotomist as needed. • Cheerfully greet customers as soon as they arrive.
Qualifications One year of clinical experience preferred. Medical terminology is desirable.
