The Laboratory Coordinator manages the daily operations of the nursing skills lab and simulation center, supporting high-quality clinical education for nursing students. This role coordinates simulation activities, laboratory scheduling, equipment and supply management, and student learning experiences across the Rhode Island College campus and nursing education facilities. The coordinator collaborates closely with faculty to prepare learning environments, provide skills remediation, and support student success initiatives. Responsibilities also include maintaining simulation technology, overseeing laboratory safety and organization, and coordinating standardized patient experiences. The position requires a BSN and active Rhode Island RN license, with an MSN and prior simulation or nursing education experience preferred.

Primary Purpose

Primary responsibilities include reviewing nursing skills and providing remediation upon faculty referral, maintaining open simulation/open lab sessions, managing all simulation activities on the main RIC campus.

Coordinates and manages all nursing resource lab and simulation center activities on the main campus, including management of laboratory space, equipment, supplies, and schedules. Prepare the Essentials of Nursing Knowledge and Practice lab and on-campus clinical activities, Health Assessment lab, and other simulation activities. Develop laboratory schedule and prepare and supervise open lab hours, remediation sessions and student learning activities on both the RIC and RINEC campuses.

Laboratory Coordination

  • Orient faculty and students to the nursing simulation and skills laboratory.
  • Collaborate with faculty to determine needs for space, equipment, and supplies.
  • Coordinate ordering of nurse packs with bookstore and vendors. Build nurse packs and distribute to students.
  • Administer evaluation surveys regarding satisfaction with the nursing lab.
  • Plan required student supplies with bookstore or vendors
  • Prepare setups for planned learning activities.
  • Aid students during individual practice session and provide skills remediation.
  • Maintain functionality and security of laboratory space and equipment (i.e. CAE and Elevate).
  • Participate in planning regarding laboratory resources.
  • Prepare and post lab schedules every semester.
  • Coordinate the use of lab space for the School of Nursing and other groups.
  • Participate in the development of policies and procedures for use of lab space and equipment.
  • Conduct laboratory inventories each semester and order supplies.
  • Initiate related work orders as appropriate
  • Monitors the laboratory budget
  • Collaborates with the Endowed Professor of Simulation and Innovation
  • Oversee the general cleanliness, safety, and organization of the laboratory and promote safe lab practices.
  • Assist with lab/simulation learning activities at the Rhode Island Nursing Education center as needed
  • Support student success programming (i.e. Nursing Student Success Coaching Program).

Simulation

  • Plans and coordinates all simulation activities at FLS.
  • Coordinates the schedule of activities with faculty.
  • Book rooms.
  • Schedule Standardized Patients.
  • Prepare room and equipment for each simulation.
  • Provide information to students.
  • Manage Computer Aided Engineering technology (CAE).
  • Prepare rosters for simulation evaluation.
  • Oversee the recordings of simulation exercises.
  • Assist with securing and onboarding of Standardized Patients (SP) in consultation with the Department Chairperson.

Occasional Duties

  • Other duties related to laboratory coordination as assigned by the Dean of the School of Nursing. These activities may include some weekend or evening events.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Current nursing knowledge and skills, including current nursing practice and competence in healthcare technologies.
  • Knowledge of general laboratory procedures, techniques, and safety regulations.
  • Skilled in professional written and verbal communication, record-keeping and interpersonal skills.
  • Highly organized and self-motivated
  • Detail oriented
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, OneDrive and SharePoint.

Required Qualifications

Education: BSN

Licenses: RI RN License

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior administrative experience, experience working with students, experience running nursing labs and simulations.
  • MSN and related experience preferred.
