    This position is in a new basic research lab opening in October 2026 in the Department of Physical Therapy. The primary purpose of the Laboratory Coordinator is to assist with setting up the new lab including building electrophysiology rigs and assisting in day-to-day tasks of starting the lab. After the first 6 months or once the animal colony is established, the person in this position will be responsible for managing the mouse colony (weaning, genotyping and breeding) and performing breathing experiments in mice. Our research focuses on understanding the cellular, circuit and whole-animal mechanisms of breathing development in health and disease. The overarching goal of this research is to inform new strategies for improving breathing during early life.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Manage the mouse colony: set up breeding pairs, wean mice, collect DNA samples, perform routine PCR and gel electrophoresis experiments to determine mouse genotype.
    • Perform breathing experiments on mice at different developmental stages ranging from birth to adulthood. Analyze and graph data using GraphPad Prism software.
    • Manage regulatory compliance including lab safety, chemical waste safety, and other safety protocols.
    • Participate in general lab maintenance including ordering supplies, organizing and maintaining files and records.
    • Perform construction-related tasks: build electrophysiology and brain slice stations, install shelves, customize lab space to meet experiment needs.
    • Organize and inventory existing lab contents; Receive, unbox and organize new items in the lab space.

    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Sciences, Business Administration, or similar
    • A minimum of 6 months of related experience.
    • Experience constructing and assembling laboratory equipment. Experience setting up a lab.
    • Ability to work independently and possess attention to detail.
    • Ability to communicate effectively in both written reports and oral presentations.
    • Work well in a team setting.
    • Familiarity with lab safety compliance.

    Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Master's degree in Biomedical Sciences, Business Administration, or similar
    • Skills in basic carpentry such as building and installing shelves.
    • Must be willing to work with mice and perform routine animal colony management including weaning, collecting DNA samples and performing PCR reactions and DNA gel electrophoresis for genotyping mice.
    • Must be willing to perform breathing measurements in mice at different developmental stages from birth to adulthood.
    • Experience analyzing data using LabChart and Graphpad Prism software.
