Job Summary and Qualifications

  • Able to handle and process specimens in accordance with policy, ensuring proper identification.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality per HIPAA guidelines
  • Maintains a clean working environment. Oversees department inventory; awareness of material outdates, stock rotations and reduce waste.
  • Able to recognize and resolve problems utilizing independent judgement and critical thinking, relying on procedures and applying scientific knowledge.
  • Works and communicates effectively inter or intra-departmentally and with teams to meet patient needs and organizational goals; Chooses appropriate times and channels to discuss complaints and concerns.
  • Notify management or other key stakeholders of problems or issues, as appropriate.
  • Keeps Lab Management appropriately informed of daily activities and development.
  • Oversee all competency assessments to meet regulatory requirements including direct observation, review of results, and creation of quizzes and tests.  
  • Overseas and conducts education and training for new personnel, fellows, residents, students and visitors within the Laboratory scope of practice, including updating training documentation.
  • Able to recognize when staff require additional or remedial training. Responsible for overseeing retraining and remedial training for staff when necessary.
  • Documents corrective actions taken for problem resolution, including errors. Assists Lab Management with occurrence reporting, investigation, and in writing and delivering corrective actions as well as staff coaching sessions.
  • Assists with specimen tracking and problem investigations, both within the hospital as well as with 3rd party facilities.
  • Assists Lab management in any department specific changes, upgrades or projects in a timely manner.Responsible for updating and maintaining policies and procedures when needed per their department.
  • Responsible for department scheduling including monitoring breaks, as well as attendance tracking.
  • Works and communicates effectively inter or intra-departmentally and with teams to meet patient needs and organizational goals; Chooses appropriate times and channels to discuss complains and concerns.
  • Keeps Lab Management appropriately informed of daily activities and development. Notify management or other key stakeholders of problems or issues as appropriate.
  • Attends and participates in continuing education opportunities to maintain relevancy and currency in professional practices and standards. Participates in quality and process improvement projects.
  • Responsible for department preparation and representation during times of inspection.
  • May need to be on-call if warranted due to staffing shortages.
