    Responsibilities

    Mayo Clinic Laboratories is seeking a Laboratory Director to provide scientific, medical, and operational leadership for the new Southaven, Mississippi testing facility. Reporting directly to the Medical Director of the Southaven site, the Laboratory Director will oversee the development, validation, implementation, quality management, and regulatory compliance of testing services within Clinical Chemistry and Immunology.

    The initial focus of the role will include oversight of specialty testing programs in metals analysis, kidney stone analysis, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS)-based assays. Additional responsibilities may include oversight of immunoassays and other advanced chemistry testing platforms as the laboratory expands.

    The successful candidate will serve as a key laboratory leader, partnering with medical, scientific, technical, quality, regulatory, and operational teams to ensure delivery of high-quality, innovative laboratory services that support Mayo Clinic's commitment to exceptional patient care.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Laboratory Leadership and Oversight

    • Provide scientific and technical oversight for clinical chemistry and immunology testing performed at the Southaven facility.
    • Direct test development, validation, verification, implementation, and ongoing performance monitoring for laboratory assays.
    • Establish and maintain quality systems that ensure accurate, reliable, and timely laboratory results.
    • Review and approve standard operating procedures, quality management plans, and laboratory policies.

    Specialty Testing Programs

    • Provide oversight for metals testing programs, including trace elements and toxic metals analyses.
    • Direct scientific and technical activities related to ICP-MS methods and instrumentation.
    • Oversee kidney stone analysis services, ensuring analytical quality and clinical relevance of testing.
    • Support development and expansion of specialty chemistry and immunology testing menus.

    Regulatory and Quality Responsibilities

    • Ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, FDA, OSHA, and other applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements.
    • Participate in inspections, proficiency testing programs, corrective actions, and quality improvement initiatives.
    • Monitor quality indicators and laboratory performance metrics.
    • Lead investigations of quality events and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.

    Clinical Consultation and Scientific Leadership

    • Provide consultative support to laboratory clients, physicians, and other healthcare professionals regarding test utilization and interpretation.
    • Collaborate with Mayo Clinic Laboratories medical and scientific staff on assay development and optimization.
    • Participate in scientific review, publication, educational activities, and professional presentations.
    • Contribute to strategic planning and growth initiatives for the Southaven laboratory.

    Personnel Development

    • Partner with laboratory management to recruit, develop, and mentor technical and professional staff.
    • Foster a culture of safety, quality, innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
    • Support training and competency assessment programs for laboratory personnel.

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications

    • Doctoral degree (PhD, MD, DO, or equivalent) in Clinical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Immunology, Pathology, or a related discipline.
    • Board certification by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (ABCC), American Board of Pathology (Clinical Pathology), American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB), or another appropriate board recognized for high-complexity laboratory oversight.
    • Demonstrated expertise in clinical chemistry and advanced analytical technologies.
    • Experience with ICP-MS instrumentation and trace metals testing.
    • Knowledge of CLIA, CAP, and quality management systems.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Previous laboratory director, associate director, or technical director experience in a clinical reference laboratory or academic medical center.
    • Experience with specialty chemistry testing, toxicology, trace elements, or mass spectrometry-based assays.
    • Experience with immunoassay platforms and clinical immunology testing.
    • Demonstrated success in assay development, validation, and laboratory expansion initiatives.
    • Record of scholarly activity, publications, presentations, or professional leadership.
