Job Title: Laboratory Evening Supervisor Department: Laboratory

Job Summary:
The Laboratory Evening Supervisor manages and directs all laboratory activities during the evening shift. This includes insuring that all in-house STAT’s and timed draws are performed as directed and that all courier tests are completed in an accurate, efficient and timely manner. The individual will also guarantee that the appropriate clinician is notified of any critical values that are obtained by testing specimens on the evening shift.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Perform all STAT and timed tests available in all laboratory sections.
- Maintain thorough working knowledge of all major pieces of laboratory equipment utilized on the evening shift as well as current and evolving technologies.
- Perform troubleshooting of all major pieces of laboratory equipment utilized on the evening shift.
- Assess workload and assign evening shift staff so that all work is completed in an efficient and timely manner. Calls in additional staff as emergency situations may require.
- Serve as the principle liaison between the day shift and night shift related problems with functioning of equipment or workflow and reporting issues.
- Serve as a resource for other hospital personnel needing testing or specimen information on the evening shift.
- Review and ensure that test analysis done on the evening shift is complete and accurate.
- Orient and train new staff assigned to the evening shift.
- Responsible for performance management of staff including performance appraisals for staff assigned to the evening shift.
- Address any problems with the specimens such as insufficient quality, hemolysis, mislabeled or missing samples.
- Accurately document any problems or incidents that occur on the evening shift and review them with the Laboratory Administrative Director.
- Provide statistical reports regarding evening shift activity and volumes to the Laboratory Administrative Director as requested to help make appropriate decisions on future operations, if needed upon request.
- Serve on hospital or laboratory committees as requested.
- Serve as a resource to hospital personnel for chemical or hazardous spills that occur in the building on the evening shift.
- Communicate any problems with personnel, procedures, instruments, or clinicians to the Laboratory Administrative Director with recommendations for resolutions.
- Help collect patient or test data run on the evening shift for studies or new methodologies that are being evaluated if needed or upon request.
- Comply with all county, state and federal government rules and regulations concerning the health, safety, equal opportunity, and laboratory operations
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities (Unit Specific):
- Strong technical skills as a generalist are required.
- Excellent computer skills; Proficient in standard computer programs.
- Basic office skills such as typing, sorting and record keeping.
- Ability to effectively work and communicate in a team environment.
- Attention to detail and ability to effectively multi-task are essential.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in clinical, chemical or biological sciences.
- Minimum of six years of clinical laboratory experience required.
- NYS licensed as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist.
Working Conditions:
- Frequent and prolonged periods of sitting, working on a computer, standing and walking; subject to intermittent interruptions.
- Exposure to patient blood, urine, and other body fluid samples along with other hazardous materials.
- Requires frequent bending and light to moderate lifting.
- Requires careful handling of specimens, supplies and equipment to prevent injuries to others and self (avoiding spills or unnecessary occupational exposure).
- Serves on hospital or laboratory committees as requested.
- Requires ability to lift, move, carry, push or pull up to 30 lbs. using proper body mechanics.
- Actively participates in Quality Assurance programs and CQI, cross training, in-service programs; completes unit-specific competencies.
- Comply with DOH requirements for annual health assessments and requires immunizations.
Pay Range: $41.00-$48.00/hr
Employee salary is based on commensurate experience and other qualifications.
