Laboratory Safety Officer

Employment Type: Contract – 12 Months+
Schedule: Full-Time, On-Site

Position Summary

Lighthouse Lab Services is partnering with a leading healthcare organization to identify an experienced Laboratory Safety Officer to oversee laboratory safety practices, employee health and safety programs, and compliance with applicable occupational health and safety regulations.

This is an initial 12-month contract position with a strong likelihood of extension and potential for a longer-term opportunity.

The Laboratory Safety Officer will be responsible for managing and maintaining safety rules, policies, procedures, and health programs within the laboratory environment. This individual will serve as a key resource for laboratory staff and leadership regarding OSHA requirements, workplace safety, hazardous materials, biological and chemical hazards, infection prevention, and employee health and safety.

The ideal candidate will have previous clinical laboratory safety experience and understand the unique safety and compliance requirements associated with a clinical laboratory environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee laboratory safety policies, procedures, and programs.

  • Ensure laboratory operations remain compliant with applicable OSHA requirements and occupational health and safety regulations.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain laboratory safety rules and procedures.

  • Monitor compliance with established safety practices and identify areas requiring corrective action.

  • Conduct routine laboratory safety inspections and assessments.

  • Identify potential workplace hazards and work with laboratory leadership to implement appropriate corrective measures.

  • Manage employee health and safety programs related to the laboratory environment.

  • Support programs related to occupational exposures, injury prevention, infection prevention, and employee safety.

  • Provide guidance and training to laboratory staff regarding safety policies, OSHA requirements, proper work practices, and hazard prevention.

  • Oversee safe handling, storage, labeling, and disposal of chemical, biological, and hazardous materials.

  • Maintain appropriate safety documentation, records, training logs, inspection reports, and compliance materials.

  • Assist with investigation and documentation of workplace incidents, injuries, exposures, and safety concerns.

  • Coordinate appropriate follow-up and corrective actions following safety incidents or identified deficiencies.

  • Monitor laboratory work areas to ensure employees are following established safety rules and procedures.

  • Assist with preparation for regulatory inspections, audits, and safety reviews.

  • Communicate changes to OSHA requirements, safety standards, and organizational policies to laboratory personnel.

  • Serve as a resource to laboratory leadership and employees regarding safety-related questions and concerns.

  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and regulatory compliance throughout the laboratory.

  • Identify opportunities to improve laboratory safety programs and reduce workplace risks.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, or a related field preferred.

  • Clinical laboratory experience is strongly preferred.

  • Previous experience managing or supporting laboratory safety programs, employee health programs, or occupational safety initiatives.

  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and workplace safety requirements.

  • Knowledge of laboratory-specific safety practices and regulatory requirements.

  • Experience with chemical, biological, and hazardous material safety.

  • Understanding of infection prevention and employee exposure prevention practices.

  • Strong understanding of safe laboratory work practices.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to educate laboratory staff and reinforce safety requirements.

  • Ability to identify safety risks, investigate concerns, and implement practical corrective actions.

  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with laboratory leadership and staff.

Preferred Experience

  • Clinical laboratory safety officer or laboratory safety coordinator experience.

  • Experience managing OSHA compliance within a clinical laboratory or healthcare setting.

  • Experience developing or maintaining laboratory safety policies and procedures.

  • Experience conducting laboratory safety inspections or compliance audits.

  • Experience with employee health and occupational exposure programs.

  • Experience supporting regulatory inspections or accreditation activities.

  • Familiarity with biological safety, chemical hygiene, hazardous waste, and exposure control programs.

Work Environment

This is a full-time, on-site position within a clinical laboratory environment. The Laboratory Safety Officer will work closely with laboratory staff and leadership and should be comfortable spending significant time within laboratory work areas to monitor safety practices, address concerns, and ensure compliance with established safety requirements.
