Job Summary
Under direction of the supervisor, this position involves conducting laboratory safety reviews to promote a safe workplace and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. These safety reviews include health and safety programs involving hazardous chemicals, controlled substances, carcinogenic materials, radioactive materials, noise hazards, indoor air quality, laboratory safety, fire and life safety, and Cal/OSHA compliance.
This position will spend the majority of their time providing support to faculty, departmental safety coordinators, staff, and students to promote a safe and healthful work environment. They will conduct comprehensive laboratory safety reviews, radiation audits, and controlled substance inspections, as well as safety reviews of other technical areas and off-campus locations as assigned. They will conduct follow-up reviews on all required safety issues and support the researchers in resolving safety issues or concerns in a timely manner and provide expertise to support all aspects of the laboratory safety program. They will maintain knowledge/expertise on existing/proposed changes in all regulations and apply relevant laws, regulations, codes and standards, consistent with campus policies and procedures and departmental objectives.
In addition, they will support and assist with ongoing technological and procedural changes, including developing, and implementing safety programs, initiatives, procedures, and training. They will conduct regular outreach on relevant safety issues to campus community, both scheduled and as-needed. They will recommend or design improvements to existing processes and procedures to support continuous improvement. They will lead and/or participate in college/school meetings, workgroups or committees.
