    Position Summary

    The Laboratory Technician I will support research activities in the Huet Laboratory within the Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences. The laboratory investigates the organellar biology of apicomplexan parasites using molecular, cellular, genetic, and biochemical approaches. The incumbent will assist with daily laboratory operations, maintain cell culture systems, perform routine and specialized research procedures, prepare laboratory reagents and supplies, maintain accurate research records, provide guidance and support to junior researchers, and contribute to the overall success of ongoing research projects.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

    • Knowledge of basic molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology, and biochemical laboratory techniques.
    • Ability to perform PCR, RT-PCR, DNA gel electrophoresis, cloning, and DNA construct preparation.
    • Ability to perform biochemical assays, including SDS-PAGE and immunoblotting.
    • Knowledge of mammalian cell culture techniques and aseptic laboratory procedures.
    • Ability to maintain accurate laboratory records and experimental documentation.
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • Ability to operate laboratory equipment and troubleshoot routine laboratory issues.
    • Ability to manage laboratory inventories, order supplies, and coordinate with vendors.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively in a collaborative research environment.
    • Ability to train and assist students and junior laboratory personnel.

    Physical Demands

    • Work is primarily performed in a laboratory environment.
    • Requires standing, walking, bending, and lifting laboratory supplies and equipment.
    • Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate laboratory instruments and perform precise experimental procedures.
    • May require working with biological materials, chemicals, and Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) organisms while following established safety protocols.
    • Ability to lift and move laboratory supplies weighing up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis.

    Duties/Responsibilities

    Maintain mammalian cell culture systems, prepare media and buffers, and support routine laboratory operations necessary for ongoing research activities.

    Percentage of time 20 Duties/Responsibilities

    Perform molecular biology and biochemical techniques, including PCR, RT-PCR, DNA gel electrophoresis, cloning, DNA construct engineering, SDS-PAGE, and immunoblotting. Maintain accurate records of experimental procedures and results.

    Percentage of time 35 Duties/Responsibilities

    Operate and maintain laboratory equipment; manage laboratory inventory; prepare, order, and stock supplies; and coordinate with vendors regarding equipment, reagent, and supply issues.

    Percentage of time 15 Duties/Responsibilities

    Assist with data compilation, interpretation, and reporting; communicate findings to the principal investigator; and support research project objectives through written and oral updates.
