Ulland Brothers Inc. is a Civil/Highway/Heavy aggregate and site development contractor with offices in Carlton, Virginia and Albert Lea, MN. Ulland Brothers has operated in the construction industry for over 100 years.

The position of Laboratory Technician reports to the Lead Lab Technician and the Quality Control Manager. The Laboratory Technicians primary responsibility is Sampling and Testing of Hot Mix and Aggregate materials before and during the production of Hot Mix Asphalt.

Duties and Responsibilities

Aggregate Sampling & Testing

• Performing various Aggregate Physical Properties Testing including but not limited to:
• Sieve Analysis
• Specific Gravity & Absorption Percent
• Crushing CAA & FAA
• Moisture Content Percent
• Spall Content
• Ignition
• Oven Correction Factors
• Other aggregate testing as needed
• Collecting Stockpile samples for mix design as needed.
• Collecting other Aggregate samples as needed.

Hot Mix Asphalt Sampling & Testing

• Performing various Hot Mix Asphalt Physical Properties Testing including but not limited to:
• Asphalt Content
• Ignition Oven Extraction and/or Plant Spot Check
• Air Void Content
• Bulk Specific Gravity
• Maximum Specific Gravity
• Core Density testing
• Other bituminous related testing as needed
• Perform Coring and Collection of Hot Mix Asphalt Cores as needed.
• Collecting Bituminous samples as needed.
• Performing density testing as needed.

Other General Duties

• Participation in construction site safety & housekeeping daily.
• Maintaining and Cleaning of the laboratory and grounds daily to insure a safe and professional work environment.
• Assisting and performing laboratory teardown and set up before and after mobilization.
• Perform duties as directed by UBI Management Supervision.
• Perform additional assignments as requested including ongoing in person or online training.

Qualifications

• Safety must be one of your core values.
• Related experience in Hot Mix Asphalt & Aggregate Sampling and Testing is a plus however we will train an appropriate candidate.
• Must be willing to take Certification Classes as required for sampling and testing.
• Excellent communication skills and professional presents.
• Good organizational skills.
• Must be able to travel when needed.
• Must be willing to work nights, weekends and long hours when needed.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs. regularly and work in mixed indoor and outdoor environments.
• Must have current Drivers License and good driving record.
• This is a safety sensitive position; drug testing is required.
