Job Summary:
The Scientist I, Microbiology Development is responsible for performing microbiological testing on pharmaceutical products, raw materials, and medical devices. This role supports routine and non-routine laboratory studies involving sterility testing, microbial limits testing, bioburden enumeration, biological indicator evaluation, and antimicrobial/disinfectant efficacy testing. The position works under the supervision of a lead scientist or manager and follows USP, ASTM, and Good Documentation Practices (GDP) guidelines. Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform microbiological testing on pharmaceutical products, medical devices, and raw materials.
  • Conduct sterility testing, microbial limits testing, bioburden testing, and biological indicator evaluations.
  • Execute antimicrobial efficacy and disinfectant efficacy studies using USP and ASTM methodologies.
  • Prepare microbiological media, reagents, and bacterial cultures.
  • Perform bacterial culture propagation and maintenance activities.
  • Label laboratory plates, tubes, and test materials accurately.
  • Maintain laboratory supplies and inventory of microbiological media and reagents.
  • Assist with equipment qualification, validation, calibration, and routine maintenance.
  • Record, analyze, and present experimental data and laboratory results.
  • Maintain laboratory notebooks and complete documentation according to Good Documentation Practices (GDP).
  • Follow laboratory safety procedures, SOPs, and quality standards.
  • Support general laboratory operations and perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor s degree in Microbiology, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, or a related scientific discipline.
  • 1 2 years of laboratory experience in microbiology, biology, chemistry, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, or related scientific environments.
  • Experience with microbiological techniques and aseptic laboratory practices.
  • Strong documentation, data recording, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in a pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, or contract testing laboratory.
  • Knowledge of USP and ASTM microbiological testing methods.
  • Experience with:
    • Sterility testing
    • Microbial limits testing
    • Bioburden enumeration
    • Biological indicator testing
    • Antimicrobial efficacy testing
    • Disinfectant efficacy studies
  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment qualification, validation, and calibration processes.
  • Understanding of GMP, GDP, and regulated laboratory environments.
