Job Description:

The Laboratory Technician provides technical, operational, and research support for laboratory activities within the Biodesign Center for Mechanisms of Evolution. This position supports research in molecular biology, microbiology, coral biology, and the investigation of cellular mechanisms underlying coral bleaching.The Laboratory Technician is responsible for maintaining an organized and efficient laboratory environment, preparing materials and reagents for experiments, assisting with molecular biology procedures, maintaining coral aquarium systems and marine organism cultures, and supporting ongoing research projects. The position requires demonstrated laboratory experience, attention to detail, the ability to learn and apply research techniques, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a collaborative research environment.The ideal candidate is responsible, eager to learn, detail-oriented, and interested in participating in an ongoing project exploring the cellular mechanism of coral bleaching in the lab.

Compensation Rate: $21.20 per hour

Essential Duties:

  • Maintain laboratory organization, inventory, supplies, and equipment.

  • Prepare media, reagents, solutions, and materials for laboratory experiments.

  • Assist with molecular biology procedures, sample preparation, and processing.

  • Support research on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of coral bleaching.

  • Maintain coral aquarium systems and care for corals, anemones, and other marine organisms.

  • Assist with experimental setup, sample collection, documentation, and laboratory records.

  • Support coral biology, conservation, and related laboratory and field research activities.

  • Follow laboratory safety procedures and established research protocols.

  • Collaborate with faculty, researchers, students, and other laboratory personnel.

  • Perform other laboratory and research support duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, sustainability, environmental sciences, marine sciences, or a related field

  • Experience working in a biological or research laboratory.

  • Experience with general laboratory organization, inventory, and preparation of laboratory materials.

  • Experience with basic molecular biology and microbiology techniques.

  • Experience preparing media, solutions, reagents, or materials used for bacterial cultures and laboratory experiments.

  • Laboratory or field experience involving coral biology, marine organisms, aquarium systems, or related biological research.

  • Ability to follow established laboratory protocols, safety requirements, and experimental procedures.

  • Ability to maintain accurate laboratory records and organize biological samples and research materials.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple assignments and priorities while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.

Working Environment:

  • Regular activities require the ability to manage multiple tasks at one time, to be able to prioritize tasks, to manage conflict, to interact in a team environment, and to communicate effectively to exchange accurate information.  

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting and/or laboratory in Biodesign C480, subject to extended periods of being in a stationary position, operating a computer and other office productivity machinery; required to move a moderate distance to perform work.  

  • Frequently moves up to 25 pounds for various needs.

  • May be required to wear personal protective equipment before entering laboratories, such as a lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, closed-toe shoes, and a respirator.
