    Job Title: Laboratory Worker

    Job Description:

    Primary Role

    Performs laboratory tests to analyze raw water and finished water for such purposes as quality control and process control.

    Key Accountabilities

    • Frequently analyzes finished water samples for bacteriological and chlorine analysis.
    • Frequently sterilizes and cleans glassware and other laboratory equipment in accordance with established laboratory procedures.
    • Frequently monitors and records instrument and equipment settings or readings at predetermined collection points.
    • Frequently inputs results of bacteriological collection and analysis on computer.
    • Frequently prepares sample bottles by washing, labeling, and adding appropriate measure of chlorinating agent.
    • Occasionally trailer, unloads, and loads sample collection boat at predetermined launch sites.
    • Occasionally drives sample collection boat to predetermined collection points on the river, observing proper navigational techniques and boating safety procedures.
    • Frequently collects water samples of distributed finished water and industrial discharges at predetermined collection points, using proper sampling techniques.
    • Occasionally removes/reinstalls meters and sampling stand.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Experience/Education

    • High school graduate or state-recognized educational equivalency certificate.
    • Specific vocational preparation includes an occupationally significant combination of vocational education, apprentice training, in-plant training, on-the job training, or essential experience in less responsible jobs which lead to the higher job or serving in other jobs.

    Work Environment

    • A large part of the job involves outdoor work and routinely being exposed to outdoor weather conditions involving contact with water and other liquids.
    • Atmospheric condition with moisture content sufficiently high to cause marked bodily discomfort.
    • Exposure to ambient temperature extremes both hot and cold.
    • Works near chlorine, sodium hydroxide, fluoride, carbon, lime, alum, polyaluminum chloride, filter aid, zinc orthophosphate, a host of laboratory chemicals, gasoline, and oil.
    • Potential exposure to poison ivy, oak, sumac, snakes, insects, and chemicals.
    • Potential hazards include driving in automobile traffic, driving a boat, and potential contact with disease causing organisms
