Performs general labor to maintain City streets and to support various department projects.
Duties

Primary
Maintains and repairs City streets and right-of-ways, using various types of equipment such as air compressor, chipper, shovels, chain saw, rakes and lutes.
Patches streets, sidewalks, curbs, inlets, and alleys using appropriate equipment and materials.
Operates dump truck, asphalt screed, concrete finisher, tractor, small sweeper and leafer to clean and maintain City streets and right-of-ways as assigned. Regularly checks trucks and equipment to ensure proper fluid levels and mechanical functions, prepares work orders for necessary repairs.
Removes debris such as leaves, sand, and snow from streets, sidewalks, parking lots, drains, and alleys.
Trims and clears trees, leaves, and brush from City streets and right-of-ways using chain saws, chippers, stump grinder and leafers.
Flags traffic at street construction sites.
May be called for emergency work at times other than the regular shift period.
Responsible for maintaining a safe work environment.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
High school diploma; or equivalent (GED); or combination of education and experience that give the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
Ability to obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL-B with air brakes) within probationary period. Current CDL-B or CDL-A holders, preferred.
Experience and skill in the operation of equipment and hand tools such as air compressor, chain saw, chippers, leafers, lutes, shovels, stump grinder and rakes preferred.
Knowledge of safety procedures for working around heavy equipment, and/or working around traffic.
Knowledge of and ability to operate trucks and related equipment. Experience operating asphalt screeds, concrete finishers, and related hand tools, preferred.
Basic knowledge of the mechanics of light equipment and ability to perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs.

Performs duties which require frequent bending and lifting, pushing and/or pulling of equipment and tools. Must be able to lift up to 75 lbs. Incumbent is expected to remain standing and working for long periods of time with periodic breaks, and may be exposed to jolting, bumping and vibrations of equipment.
Performs majority of duties out-of-doors, in varying weather conditions, and is periodically exposed to excessive noise, dirt, dust, and vehicle and equipment fumes. Safety precautions must be used at all times to avoid injury to self and others.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including co-workers, City and other government officials, community groups, and the general public.

All new hires to the City for American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) positions will initially start out at Step 1 of the assigned pay grade for the assigned position. Then after a 120 day probation, pay will increase to a minimum of a Step 2 for that position, however based on the new hires skills, knowledge, abiliites, and experience the pay could be moved to a higher step.
