LABORER - GAS DISTRIBUTION (Kansas City)

Mears Installation, LLC is looking to fill a Laborer position on our gas distribution crews. As a Laborer, you are vital to project success by ensuring safety, efficiency, and progress on the job site. You'll work outdoors as part of a team safely installing and replacing the underground gas lines that keep Kansas City running. Best of all, this is year-round work - gas distribution doesn't shut down when the weather turns or the commercial market slows. It's a chance to get fresh air, learn a skilled trade, and build valuable industry experience. The role can be physically demanding and requires work in various weather conditions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Load or assist with loading materials and equipment.
  • Use hand tools to dig near existing underground utilities.
  • Prepare and pre-trip equipment before mobilizing to the job site.
  • Assist in securing the work site, equipment, and materials at the end of each shift.
  • Complete documents, reports, or job aids related to work, equipment, and safety.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid driver's license (Class A CDL a plus - we'll help you earn one).

  • Detail-oriented and coachable, willing to follow instructions.
  • Pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.

PAY & ADVANCEMENT

  • Starting pay $18.51-$23.13/hour depending on classification. Candidates with prior experience may be hired above the probationary rate, and you'll move to your post-probation rate within 90 days.
  • Opportunity to get fitter certification in first 60-90 days and promotion to Fitter/Fuser with a starting rate of up to $26.31.
  • A real career path with higher pay at each step as you qualify: Laborer Fitter/Fuser Operator Foreman.
  • Paid on-the-job training and skill certifications (fusion, operator qualification, and more).

PREMIUMS & EXTRA EARNINGS

  • Overtime at time-and-a-half for all hours over 40 in a week and for Sunday work.
  • Double-time pay on seven holidays (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day) plus holiday pay even when you don't work them.
  • $3.00/hour night differential for hours worked between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.
  • $1.00/hour Class A CDL premium if a CDL is required for your job - and if you don't have one, we'll help you get licensed.
  • $50/day per diem plus company-paid hotel lodging when you're working away from home, if eligible.
  • Two-hour show-up pay if you report and work isn't available.

  • Retirement:the company contributes $1.40 for every hour you work toward your retirement plan (eligible after one year of service), plus a 401(k)/Roth 401(k) with a 50% company match on the first 10% you contribute - no waiting period to start contributing.
  • Paid vacation, loaded up front each year:80 hours after 1 year, 120 hours after 5 years, and 160 hours after 10 years of service.
  • Voluntary short-term and long-term disability insurance, with the company paying 50% of the premium (eligible after six months).

  • $200/year reimbursementfor PPE, steel-toed boots, and work uniforms - and we provide your hard hat, safety vest, gloves, safety glasses, and any task-specific PPE.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work outdoors in a range of weather conditions, including heat and cold.
  • Stand or walk for long periods on uneven, variable terrain.
  • Repeatedly lift heavy loads, up to 50 lbs.
  • Repetitive movements such as kneeling, crawling, climbing, and reaching.
  • Use hand tools to dig near existing underground utilities.
  • Use hand and power tools; maintain manual dexterity for fine tasks.
  • Travel to job sites as needed.
  • Good vision (corrected or uncorrected) and balance are required.

This is a union-represented position covered by the collective bargaining agreement between Mears Installation, LLC and United Steelworkers (USW) Local 348. Union membership and dues apply after the 90-day probationary period, in accordance with the agreement.

This position is subject to the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) drug & alcohol testing regulations as outlined in 49 CFR Part 382 and/or 49 CFR Part 199.
