Position Description

The City of Seattle is seeking a dependable and service-oriented Laborer (Janitorial Services) to support the maintenance and cleanliness of City Hall, the Seattle Justice Center, and surrounding facilities. This role plays a key part in maintaining safe, welcoming, and accessible public spaces.

ABOUT US

FAS is often the publics first interaction with the City of Seattle, operating as a customer-focused front door that assists with everything from paying utilities or reporting a pothole to requesting public information or even adopting a new pet.

The 500-plus employees of FAS span across 10 divisions and work behind-the-scenes providing critical functions, like managing 120 City facilities-including police and fire stations-overseeing the Citys neighborhood customer service centers and Customer Service Bureau and making sure minority-owned businesses can equitably compete for City contracts. No matter the need, FAS is here-at your service.

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform routine indoor and outdoor cleaning tasks, including restrooms, lobbies, offices, sidewalks, stairways, and plazas.
  • Operate janitorial and maintenance equipment such as pressure washers, leaf blowers, vacuums, floor scrubbers, and carpet cleaners.
  • Assist with event support, room setups, space arrangements, and office relocations.
  • Provide basic assistance to arborist teams as assigned.
  • Drive pickup trucks or related equipment as required.
  • Load, unload, and transport materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Ability to perform general laboring/manual work, good physical condition, and the ability to work with hand and power tools is required.

(Or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class.)

The most successful candidates will possess the following:

  • Two or more years of experience in janitorial or laborer roles.
  • Experience working in public facilities.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Work Schedule

This position works 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., Saturday through Wednesday, with Thursday and Friday off.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Full-time onsite position.
  • May require evening, weekend, or holiday work.
  • Routine exposure to cleaning agents and potentially hazardous materials such as blood, bodily fluids, and needles.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Work performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Additional Information

This position is classified as a Classified Civil Service, Regular, Full-Time. It is Civil Service represented, FLSA non-exempt and is eligible for overtime. The full range for this step-progression position is $31.97 - $33.98 per hour.

Background Check: This position requires successfully passing a Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) background check. Laborers in this role may have access to secure City facilities, restricted operational areas, or information systems connected to public safety functions. CJIS clearance ensures that employees who work in or around these sensitive environments meet federal and local security standards. Candidates must complete fingerprinting and all required CJIS screening before hire.

Pre-Employment Physical: Successful candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment physical.
