Duties

Help

Loads and unloads heavy boxes, bulky supplies, and materials to and from tracks, dollies, etc, moves heavy boxes, cartons, or luggage by hand, handtruck, or dolly; opens crates and boxes using crowbars, and cuts bands using shears; stacks boxes and cartons where directed.

Performs field maintenance and site preparation across all programs. Runs hand lawnmowers or (domestic type) powered lawnmowers, when this does not require heavy physical effort (for example, on steep grades); edges, clears small trees and bushes, using handsaw, hatchet, or clipper.

Using a shovel, digs ditches and trenches where a pick is not needed to loosen the dirt, and where grading and sloping is not required; fills holes with dirt and levels bumps and low places, using shovel, hand tamper, and rake.

Moves and arranges furniture as directed; replaces ceiling tiles, performs event set up and tear down, assists with unloading and stocking kitchen, shovels snow from sidewalks; washes and waxes cars and trucks by hand or power buffer. May be required to perform simple painting tasks around program.

Drives one or more types of government vehicles such as sedan, van, truck, etc. based on specific assignments, or regular schedules to transport materials and supplies as needed for the program. Reads maps and judges road/traffic conditions to determine the shortest and safest route.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Effort: Moderately heavy physical effort is required in occasionally lifting and carrying heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and in pushing heavy furniture, loading carts, etc. Frequently lifts and carries objects weighing up to 40 pounds.

Working Conditions: Works inside or outside, occasionally in bad weather. If indoors, may be exposed to dirt and dust. Chance of serious injury (e.g., broken bones, severe cuts, strained back). Continuous standing, walking, stooping, or lifting is required.

  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and one every three years thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position requires incumbent to be at least 18 years of age and provide a copy of their HS diploma or equivalent.
  • This position may be subject to on-call, nights, days, holidays, and weekends work.
  • To be considered for this position, the applicant must be a U.S. Citizen or a Legal U.S. Resident for a minimum of 3 years.
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain current record of immunizations.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if the position allows for qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Qualifying Experience:

Basic Requirements: Must be at least 18 years of age, hold a high school diploma (or equivalent). Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing. Experience in operating one or more gasoline, diesel, or electric powered wheeled vehicles with a GVW of up to 10,000 pounds such as pickup trucks, sedans, vans, jeeps, etc. Experience of defensive driving techniques is desired, including skills to recognize developing hazardous road and traffic conditions and the judgment to select alternate routes to avoid potential problems.

Qualifying Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs): Ability to use, control, and clean common handtools, and simple power equipment. Ability to follow oral and/or written instructions involving duties with several distinct tasks or steps. Must be physically able to frequently lift and carry medium to heavy objects up to 40 pounds, and be able to occasionally lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds. Must be able to actively bend, stoop, stand, reach, and work in awkward positions.

Condition(s) of Employment: Must be able to satisfactorily complete a pre-employment physical. Successful completion and favorable adjudication of applicable background investigation (Tier 1 Level) is required. Must possess a valid state drivers license appropriate for the size and type of vehicle operated. Must provide a copy of driving record. Must maintain a good driving record. This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution.

Joint Base Langley-Eustis, located in Hampton on the southeastern coast of Virginia, is one of the oldest facilities in the Air Force. The unit services more than 9,000 active-duty, approximately 2,000 civilian personnel, 64 senior raters, 61,000 retirees and family members. We serve to provide "A Better Life for Force and Family" for our military community, through support programs for our military/civilian members and their families. Our motto is "Force, Family and Fun."

As an integral part of the 633 Force Support Squadron, the NAF Human Resource Office provides essential personnel services to over 375 NAF civilian employees assigned to numerous FSS activities. Those activities include child development and youth centers, the Langley Club, a golf course, bowling center, auto hobby shop, community center, marina, an outdoor recreation program, indoor and outdoor pools, and various administrative support offices - just to name a few.
