GENERAL SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of the foreman, operates equipment and performs manual labor in the baling facility and surrounding areas in accordance with the established county, state and federal regulations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Operate and perform daily maintenance checks on small mobile equipment such as small wheel loaders and hand and power tools such as hand shovels, rakes, steam washers, compressors, and other tools for landfill operations.
  • Operate small mobile equipment on the municipal solid waste disposal cell, in the bale facility, on the Construction & Demolition (C/D) disposal pit, around the animal disposal trenches, by the composting area (including chipping), and in the metal/appliance storage area.
  • Sort all recyclables into proper storage area.
  • Shovel and sweep trash.
  • Assist in load inspections at various places on the facility.
  • Follow instructions given, whether oral or through operating manuals.
  • Complete all required documentation (maintenance, fueling, baling operations, checklists, etc.).
  • Perform litter control, lawn work and similar tasks to maintain clean and safe working environment;
  • Make minor repairs and adjustments throughout the facility including equipment and fixed structures. May perform minor carpentry/construction projects such as fencing, painting, roofing repairs, or minor mechanical duties such as changing oil, battery/alternator repairs and similar tasks;
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Works overtime as needed including county/federal holidays, Saturday operations, or during emergency response conditions.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

  • May be exposed to varying weather conditions; noise levels, construction environment, disease, potentially hazardous or toxic waste, especially dust and odors, or related items that may be in municipal solid waste
  • Work conditions are typically in an industrial warehouse and/or construction type setting and may include sitting, standing, walking, climbing, bending, lifting of weights (usually not over 75 pounds), carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects (up to 50 pounds of force), and other related activities
  • Requires grasping, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, listening and hearing ability and visual acuity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to perform semi-skilled and unskilled manual labor, follow oral and written instructions; demonstrate skill in operating tools and equipment used at the appropriate levels.
  • Good knowledge of procedures, techniques, materials, tools, equipment, and machinery used at the appropriate level.
  • Completion of load inspection training within one (1) month of hire.
  • Possess valid driver's license.
