An OB/GYN Laborist is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist who provides inpatient care for women during labor, delivery, and the immediate postpartum period. Unlike traditional OB/GYNs, laborists work exclusively in hospital settings, offering 24/7 coverage to ensure timely and safe obstetric care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct inpatient obstetric care, including labor management, deliveries (vaginal and cesarean), and postpartum care.
  • Perform obstetric triage evaluations and respond to obstetric emergencies.
  • Collaborate with nursing staff, midwives, and other physicians to ensure coordinated, high-quality care.
  • Cover for community OB/GYNs who are unavailable during their patients’ labor.
  • Manage unassigned patients or those without a designated obstetrician.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and help develop labor and delivery protocols.
  • Educate residents, medical students, and nursing staff as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of a 4-year OB/GYN residency program.
  • Board certification or eligibility in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
  • Valid state medical license and DEA registration.
  • Advanced training in high-risk obstetrics or maternal-fetal medicine is a plus.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong clinical skills in labor and delivery, including emergency response.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and make critical decisions under pressure.
  • Commitment to patient safety and evidence-based care.

Work Schedule:

  • Typically shift-based (e.g., 12- or 24-hour shifts), including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Full-time and part-time positions may be available
