MAJOR FUNCTION

Leads and performs skilled manual work related to the maintenance and construction of landll grounds. Oversee project crews and coordinates eld operations to ensure safe, ecient, and timely completion of tasks. Contributes to overall landll operations by supervising grounds upkeep and

supporting environmental compliance eorts.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

Supervisory and Field Operations

  • Plans, assigns, and reviews of the work of Environmental Compliance Workers and Polk County Sheriff''s Office Work Release participants.

  • Supervises and participates in tasks such as trash removal, litter fence and silt fence installation and repair, and general grounds maintenance.

  • Oversee crew safety and ensures quality workmanship in accordance with landfill standards.

Equipment and Training

  • Requests for tools, materials, and equipment needed for assigned projects.

  • Trains employees in proper equipment use and safe work procedures.

  • Operates or directs the use of small equipment and tools for grounds and landfill construction activities.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Operations Manager to support landfill operations.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Operational Knowledge

  • In-depth knowledge of landfill layout and operational procedures.

  • Proficient in the use, care, and maintenance of grounds maintenance equipment.

  • Familiarity with occupational hazards and related safety precautions.

Leadership and Communication

  • Ability to supervise and motivate work crews effectively.

  • Capable of preparing clear reports and following written and oral instructions.

  • Able to maintain public relations and interact professionally with others.

Technical and Physical Capabilities

  • Competent in reading maps and interpreting site layouts.

  • Able to perform basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).

  • Proficient in basic computer applications.

  • Physically able to lift 25 pounds regularly and 50 pounds occasionally.

  • Capable of wearing required safety equipment and working in all weather conditions.

  • Willing to work varied schedules and adjust reporting locations as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalent diploma and have a minimum of five (5) years' experience in grounds maintenance or related work, including some experience in supervising/overseeing the work of others and have met the mandatory training requirements as defined by the Division.

A comparable amount of training and related experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Must have completed a basic supervisory training program.

Must have completed a basic safety training program through the County OED division or equivalent training.

A valid driver's license is required; a Florida driver's license must be obtained upon employment. The employee must maintain a clean driving record to operate an assigned county vehicle.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Weekend and evening work schedules may be a requirement of this position.

In the event of a hurricane, major storm, natural or manmade disaster that may threaten or impact the area, full-time, permanent employees will be required to assist in performance of essential functions as described in the Polk County Emergency Management Plan.

All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location and work schedule to t the needs of the County and its citizens.
