Job Summary

Job Summary

Concord University is looking to hire a Landscaper to help maintain the appearance and safety of campus grounds. This position is responsible for lawn and landscape care, including mowing, trimming, planting, and maintaining flower beds and shrubs.

The role also involves operating grounds equipment such as mowers, tractors, and snow‑removal machinery, as well as assisting with general campus support like event setup, moving materials, and responding to weather‑related needs.

Candidates must be able to work outdoors in all seasons, follow safety procedures, and perform physical tasks reliably and professionally.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duty/Responsibility

Grounds Maintenance & Landscaping - University Campus (120 Acres)

  • Campus Grounds Care - Maintain all university lawns, athletic fields, and open grounds, including mowing, trimming, edging, aeration, fertilizing, seeding, and seasonal turf restoration.
  • Landscaping Operations - Perform full‑scope landscaping such as planting, mulching, weeding, pruning, and maintaining all flower beds, gardens, and shrubbery across campus and faculty housing.
  • Equipment Operation - Safely operate tractors, backhoes, trucks, leaf machines, field drags, salt spreaders, and other heavy or specialized grounds equipment.
  • Chemical Application - Apply fertilizers, lime, pesticides, herbicides, and brush killers in accordance with safety and environmental guidelines.
  • Road & Surface Maintenance - Assist with repair and upkeep of campus roads, including pothole patching, gravel redistribution, and general surface maintenance.
  • Snow & Ice Management - Maintain and operate all snow‑removal equipment; manage inventory of salt and de‑icing chemicals; perform post‑winter cleanup of roads and parking lots.
  • Grounds Policing - Conduct regular raking, debris removal, and general policing of grounds to ensure a clean and safe campus environment.
  • Tree & Shrub Management - Trim, replace, or remove damaged shrubs and small trees as needed to maintain healthy and attractive landscaping.
  • Field Preparation - Drag and prepare athletic fields for use, ensuring safe and well‑maintained playing surfaces.

% of Time 75% Duty/Responsibility

Facilities Support & Operations

  • Furniture & Equipment Handling - Remove, relocate, and transport furniture, equipment, and materials for disposal, storage, or departmental needs.
  • Office Relocation Support - Rearrange and set up offices during moves, renovations, or departmental changes.
  • Shipment Receiving - Unload and distribute large deliveries including paper products, mattresses, computers, and other bulk items.
  • Event Setup - Prepare venues for university events such as graduation ceremonies, dinners, and social functions.
  • Skilled Trades Assistance - Provide support to plumbers, electricians, carpenters, painters, and HVAC technicians as needed.
  • Safety & Compliance - Maintain knowledge of current safety procedures; perform tasks using proper techniques and safety standards.
  • Campus Response Support - Respond to general campus service requests, operational needs, and emergency situations; remain available for contact during hazardous or urgent conditions.
  • General Facilities Operations - Carry out a variety of miscellaneous maintenance and operational tasks to support overall campus functionality.

Education/Knowledge

Minimum Education High School Required Licenses/Certification

Valid driver's license

Required Skills

  • Power Tools - Able to use chain saws, hedge trimmers, and other basic power tools.
  • Heavy Equipment - Can operate tractors, backhoes, trucks, lifts, and other groundskeeping and snow‑removal equipment.
  • Chemical Mixing - Follow instructions for mixing and using fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals.
  • Groundskeeping Basics - Understand basic landscaping work, safety rules, and daily grounds tasks.
  • Plant Care - Know how to care for plants, shrubs, flowers, and work in a greenhouse.
  • Pest & Disease Spotting - Can recognize when plants have bugs or disease.
  • Equipment Use - Comfortable using all common landscaping and labor‑support tools.
  • Following Directions - Can understand and follow written and spoken instructions.
  • Physical Work - Able to lift 50-75 lbs, stand, walk, bend, climb, and work long hours.
  • Outdoor Conditions - Can work in heat, cold, rain, snow, dust, fumes, and around chemicals.
  • Driving Skills - Can safely drive work vehicles and follow West Virginia driving rules.
  • Reliability - Show up on time and maintain good attendance.
