POSITION

To respond to fire alarms, medical emergencies, and other emergency activities in the protection of life and property; and to participate in fire prevention, training and station and equipment maintenance activities. The purpose of this recruitment is to fill a current vacancy in the Woodland Fire Department as well as establish an eligibility list for future vacancies.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The following are typical illustrations of duties encompassed by the job class, not an all-inclusive or limiting list:

• Respond to fire alarms with assigned company; lay and connect hose lines; hold nozzles and direct water streams; raise and climb ladders.
• Perform rescue operations in a variety of situations including but not limited to rescuing persons from areas threatened by fire, hazardous conditions, confined space, and active shooter/rescue task force events.
• Provide basic life support during medical incidents, assessing and initiating patient care until relieved by proper medical personnel.
• Operate all types of portable fire extinguishers, hand tools, hose lines, power tools and appliances, salvage covers, forcible entry tools, emergency medical equipment and other rescue equipment.
• Participate in fire drills; serve as instructor as assigned; attend training sessions.
• Promote and maintain safety in the workplace.
• Work cooperatively with others as integral part of a team.
• Follow chain of command and be responsive to orders.
• Regular, predictable, consistent and timely attendance is an essential function of the position, in that Employee must be present and fit for duty.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

• Respond to hazardous materials incidents and participate as member of the County Hazardous Materials Team. Shut down natural gas and electrical services to structure.
• Participate in fire inspection activities and other fire prevention, community risk reduction, and public education activities as assigned.
• Ensure that businesses are operating in compliance with the fire code.
• Participate in the programs providing various public relations services, including facility tours, public education seminars and other public events.
• Respond to inquiries from the public.
• Assist in investigating fire origin and cause.
• May be requested to respond to emergencies during non-duty hours.
• Control traffic.
• Inventory supplies; maintain records.
• Can serve as "acting positions" when certified.
• Clean station quarters and equipment and maintain a clean and orderly condition in and about the fire station; perform minor building maintenance.
• Operate radio and communications equipment.
• Assist in overhaul and salvage operations.
• Learn a wide variety of firefighting duties, methods, and procedures including the operation of firefighting apparatus, equipment, and tools.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

• High school diploma or equivalent. College-level coursework in fire science, general management, or related field is desirable.
• Proof of completion of accredited Firefighter Academy

Experience:

• Possession of at least three (3) years of full-time work experience with a municipal fire agency, including current employment in good standing. Exceptions may be considered for those in lay-off status if deemed not for cause.

License or Certificate:

Required Upon Hire:

• Proof of valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (valid for one year from issuance date).

Required Upon Hire and Continued Employment:

• Valid California Commercial Driver License (Class A or B), or Class C w/FF endorsement
• Emergency Medical Technician Certificate
• Valid CPR certification

Possession of additional experience, licenses, and certifications are considered highly desirable:

• HAZMAT FRO or higher
• Wildland- S130, S131, S190, L180
• ICS 100, 200, 700, 800
• CSFM Firefighter Safety & Survival
• CSFM Auto Extrication
• CSFM Confined Space Awareness or higher
• Rescue Systems 1, 2, and/or 3
• CSFM Trench Rescue
• Swiftwater Rescue Technician or other relevant Water Rescue Certification
• Bilingual proficiency

BENEFITS

Current Salary:

$6,959.52 - $8,459.33 /month ($3,212.09 - $3,904.31/bi-weekly)

Retirement:

CalPERS Retirement system (3% @ 50 Formula for Classic CalPERS members and 2.7% @ 57 Formula for new CalPERS members). The City does not participate in social security

Deferred Comp:

Choice of deferred compensation plans (Traditional and Roth). After successful completion of probation, new hires are also eligible for a 2% City contribution.

Medical:

CalPERS Medical Insurance Plans, including HMOs & PPOs. City gives an allowance toward the cost of insurance

Maximum Family Allowance for 2026: $2,752.96 per month and for 2027 is $2,948.97.

Dental/Vision:

City paid Delta Dental and VSP Vision Insurance

STD/LTD:

City paid wage protection for short- and long-term disabilities

Life Insurance:

City provides $50,000 life insurance policy

Voluntary Benefits:

Vacation:

11 hours per month during first 3 years of service; 72 hours of vacation added to leave bank upon hire

Sick Leave:

12 hours per month; 72 hours of sick leave added to leave bank upon hire

Holidays-In-Lieu:

11.2 hours per month

Longevity Pay:

2% of base pay at 10 years of service

Bilingual Pay:

200 per month upon certification

Education Incentive:

Up to 6% additional compensation for fire service diploma/certificates

Prof. Growth Incentive:

$625 per year for additional educational or professional activities
