LAW FIRM STAFF ACCOUNTANT

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Staff Accountant to join a well-established NYC-based insurance defense law firm. This hybrid role reports directly to the Firm Administrator and is based in midtown Manhattan. You'll manage comprehensive accounting and financial operations, overseeing billing, accounts payable/receivable, escrow accounts, and financial reporting for a dynamic legal practice.

About the Role

As the Staff Accountant, you'll be responsible for all aspects of financial management, including billing operations, account reconciliation, financial analysis, and close processes. You'll partner with firm leadership to deliver financial insights and work closely with attorneys and staff on billing and timekeeping practices.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Operations & Reporting:

• Prepare and analyze financial reports (P&L, balance sheet, general ledger, attorney hours)

• Support monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes

• Reconcile multiple escrow and operating accounts in QuickBooks

• Maintain accurate financial records and documentation

Billing & Accounts Management:

• Oversee billing operations and supervise billing team to ensure timely processing

• Manage accounts payable and receivable, including vendor invoices and client payments

• Advise attorneys and staff on timekeeping and billing practices

• Ensure accurate billing data and timely invoice generation

Strategic Support:

• Partner with leadership by delivering financial insights for decision-making

• Coordinate bonus/billing data with payroll and senior management

• Monitor cash flow and financial performance against budgets

• Support business development and growth initiatives with financial analysis

Requirements

Education & Experience (Required):

• Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field

• 5+ years of accounting experience in an insurance defense law firm (required)

• Strong proficiency in QuickBooks and Clio Manage

• Solid understanding of GAAP

• Proven ability to manage teams and work in a fast-paced environment

Core Competencies:

• Detail-oriented, organized, and proactive

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills

• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

• Experience with escrow accounting and legal billing practices

Technical Skills:
