In this role, you will:

  • Conduct confidential reference interviews with legislators, counsel, and legislative staff to identify research needs, clarify objectives, and develop effective research strategies.

  • Assist attorneys, legislative counsel, and staff in locating authoritative legal information and evaluating appropriate research sources.
  • Perform in-depth research on legal issues, legislative matters, public policy questions, and historical legislative materials.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of research requests and information accessed in support of legislative activities.
  • Provide expert guidance on legal research methodologies, database searching techniques, and effective use of library resources.
  • Assist users in navigating legal research platforms, the library catalog, digital collections, and specialized legislative resources.
  • Develop and maintain research guides, subject guides, pathfinders, and other tools to support independent research.
  • Create and deliver training sessions and instructional materials for legislators, legislative staff, interns, fellows, and other library users.
  • Monitor developments in legal information resources, research tools, and emerging technologies to enhance library services.
  • Participate in collection development activities, including evaluating and recommending legal and legislative resources.
  • Contribute to library initiatives, special projects, and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications To be considered, you must have:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school
  • Experience using legal research databases (e.g. Westlaw, Lexis, HeinOnline)
  • Familiarity with the New York State legislative process
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective customer service

The ideal candidate will also have:

  • Master's degree in Library or Information Science from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited program

Additional Comments This position is Monday through Friday, with some flexibility within the hours of 9:00AM-5:00PM but will include some unpredictable evening hours during the legislative session (January-June).
