Department Purpose and Structure

The Human Resources department at A&O Shearman partners with business and practice teams to attract, develop,

engage, and retain top talent across the firm. We provide strategic advisory and operational support across the full

employee lifecycle, including recruitment, onboarding, performance management, career development, compensation,

employee relations, and engagement.

HR plays a critical role in shaping the firm's culture and ensuring alignment with its values and strategic goals. We collaborate across functions-including Professional Development, Inclusion, and leadership teams-to deliver people-focused solutions that foster inclusion, drive performance, and support the wellbeing and growth of our employees.

Role and Responsibilities

On Campus Recruiting

• Lead on campus recruiting efforts at top US and Canadian law schools and other target schools; including strategic outreach, program design, and increasing student pipeline for recruiting purposes
• Travel to select schools for interviews, job fairs, receptions and other recruiting events
• Prepare interview packets, marketing materials, giveaways for recruitment events
• Ensure proper staffing for all programs (on campus interviewing, 1L/2L receptions, etc.)
• Manage callback interview process and "second look" visits
• Manage follow-up efforts and ensure candidates receive proper outreach
• Act as a resource and point of contact for attorneys, candidates and vendors
• Work with the larger recruiting team to ensure accuracy of information in viRecruit, the firms applicant tracking system
• Develop and compile candidate information for partner review; track candidate progression
• Enrich relationships with law schools - career planning centers, law student organizations, etc. - through targeted programs, initiatives and innovative events
• Work with HR and Lateral Recruiting teams throughout the US and Canada to ensure accuracy and cohesiveness in the recruiting process
• Continually assess and improve recruiting processes to ensure maximum efficiency and market competitiveness
• Work with various firm stakeholders to help develop innovative ways to disseminate the firm's recruiting message

Summer Associate Program

• Partner with Director, NY Manager and TX/CA Manager to manage and execute all aspects of the AOS Summer Associate Program for US offices, including pre-employment correspondence, planning and execution of summer associate events, monitoring the budget, orientation and onboarding
• Act as a key point of contact and resource for summer associates before, during, and after the program
• Oversee planning and execution of summer associate pre-orientation program (Winter Weekend)
• Manage summer practice group placements and mentor assignments
• Liaise with all relevant departments for summer associate onboarding (e.g. office services, technology and training, payroll, work authorization/visa acquisition)
• Mentor junior members of the wider recruitment team

Miscellaneous

• Actively follow changes in the industry and gather market intelligence
• Lead and engage in other departmental responsibilities and/or firm-wide projects.

Key Requirements

• A minimum of five years of prior attorney recruiting experience at a law firm
• Bachelor's Degree
• Strong ability to collaborate and engage with students, lawyers and business teams professionals
• Must be a creative problem solver and possess a high level of self-confidence, maturity and excellent judgement
• Strong ability to maintain highly confidential and sensitive information
• High energy with a great deal of enthusiasm and ability to stay calm under pressure
• Detail oriented, exceptionally strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize several responsibilities, while maintaining accuracy
• Excellent written and oral communication skills - including the ability to tailor the communication style to a specific audience
• Demonstrates a strong client service orientation
• Knowledge of the legal market and current industry is important, as is a willingness to learn
