The Mayor's Office of Language and Communications Access (OLCA) goal is to make the City of Boston accessible for everyone. Everyone deserves to have meaningful access to the information and services they need. We want all City departments to be able to provide language and communication access.

Overview of the LCA Specialist: WHO you are:

The LCA Specialist's duties include directly working with a number of departments to ensure City-wide compliance with the Mayor's Office of Language and Communications Access (OLCA) policy and ordinance.

This position reports directly to the Compliance, Development, & Training Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Support departments implementation of the OLCA policy and ordinance.
  • Ensure City departments are aware of how to successfully submit requests for accommodations and book services.
  • Attend departmental City events as needed to provide logistical & technical support and insight to ensure the event is accessible.
  • Help departments complete yearly audits regarding their spending, vital document translations, and more.
  • Support departments in creating data mechanisms to collect information on quality of services, constituent needs, and, as needed, funding usage.
  • Support creation of departments annual LCA budget requests; work closely with the Administration & Finance Manager regarding budget.
  • Provide departments with information on funding usage and remaining funding as needed.
  • Help departments create an equitable outreach & engagement strategy for events and vital information.
  • Help departments in the creation of RFPs, WQCs, or contracts related to LCA accommodations.
  • Ensure thorough knowledge of LCA guidelines and procedures.
  • Support the acquisition of urgent accommodations as needed.
  • Support the creation of departmental plans and updates on a biannual basis.
  • Perform related tasks and duties as assigned.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications

  • A minimum of three (3) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in public speaking, office administration, project management, or a similar field is required.
  • An undergraduate degree with a major in public administration, communications, or human resources may be substituted for the required experience.
  • Demonstrated communication, interpersonal, organizational, and follow-up skills.
  • Working knowledge of computer-based software, such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) and Google Suite (Google Docs, Google Spreadsheets), as well as PeopleSoft, is preferred.
  • Ability to multitask and manage several projects at once.
  • Willingness to work directly with multiple City departments.
  • Fluent in English and another spoken language.
  • Familiar with the concept of language access.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence with diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic groups, multilingual populations, and persons with disabilities.
  • Ability to effectively respond to and interact with all levels of organizational staff.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, interpersonal, and written/oral communication skills.
  • Strong writing skills, including ability to prepare reports, presentations, and accurate records.
