This position is located at the SC Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) - Office of Mental Health, G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital, 220 Faison Drive, Columbia SC 29203.

As the Activity Therapist III / Lead Activity Therapist Supervisor, you will lead, under the direct supervision of the Facility Director, providing a comprehensive Recreational Therapy Program for mentally ill patients. you will utilize knowledge in behavioral health for treatment of adult, dually diagnosed psychiatric and behavioral health patients.

Responsibilities for the Activity Therapist III / Lead Activity Therapist Supervisor include:

  • Plan, organize, and implement goal-oriented Activity Therapy groups and leisure activities for adult patients based on individualized needs and recommendations from the interdisciplinary treatment team. Demonstrate the ability to effectively collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to provide quality care to patients participating in therapeutic activities.
  • Prepare timely written and electronic medical records documentation for patients on assigned case load, related to treatment goals; patients identified interests, skills, and problem areas; and cohesive with treatment plans, assessments, re-assessments, progress notes, interest surveys, and other medical records documentation.
  • Record statistical data daily. Submit calendars, requisitions, and statistical reports as requested and/or needed. Complies with Performance Improvement and Infection Control measures. Knowledgeable of directives, policies and procedures compliant with agency and hospital accrediting standards and regulations.
  • As an interdisciplinary treatment team member, attends and participates in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings, providing pertinent feedback and input regarding patients' progress, involvement, schedules, etc in TR activities. Provide interdisciplinary treatment team coverage for adult treatment programs in times of staff shortage. Recommend appropriate patient groups as part of an interdisciplinary treatment approach. Submit information for the Master Treatment Plan as it relates to assigned patients and groups, providing timely, accurate documentation as required.
  • Ensure coverage for evening, weekend, and holiday leisure activities and special/seasonal events. Complete monthly peer reviews and annual program evaluations for assigned staff.
  • Attend Activity Therapy, hospital, and committee meetings to provide and obtain information on patients. Attend in-service training and workshops to keep therapy skills current. Provide in-service to staff regarding specialized areas of knowledge as requested. Maintain and demonstrate competency in MANDT, CPR, Infection Control, Safety and Risk Management, Patient Rights, MIS, Corporate Compliance and Cultural Competence, and complete SCEIS modules.
  • Observe and comply with rules, regulations and policies, modeling professionalism to staff at all times. Ensure equipment utilized in TR groups and activities is maintained and safe for use. As appropriate, submits equipment requests, repair needs, and inventory reports. Meet with Supervisor monthly.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

  • A bachelors degree in physical education, recreation or a related field and relevant program experience.

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 fifty pounds, push a wheelchair, stand, walk for long period of time, climb, maneuver patients in wheelchairs, walkers; able to work outdoors, drive at night, work evenings, nights, weekends; work inclement weather (all employees are considered essential staff). Ability to push, pull, bend, and stoop.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A master's degree in Recreation with emphasis in Therapeutics, Art, Physical & Leisure Education, Exercise Science, Health, Music, Health Science, Sports Management, Human Service Counseling, Human Performance, Behavior Management Fine Arts, one (1) year of experience in the above fields, and one (1) year of supervisory experience; OR a bachelor's degree in the above fields, two (2) years of experience working with adults, and two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of behavior/level of functioning of adult patients.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with adult/geriatric psychiatric patients, other departments and professionals.
  • Certification with the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation
  • Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.

Additional Comments

Post hire, employees must:

  • Act in the absence of the Activity Therapy Supervisor as needed, conduct therapeutic programs with minimal supervision.
  • Have knowledge of state, federal regulations, current guidelines, policies, procedures, policies related to TR and patients in a psychiatric hospital.
