Provides direct supervision on animal care technicians on their "team" during weekdays, as well as on the rotating schedules for weekends and holidays. Oversees the performance of daily husbandry tasks for a diverse range of laboratory animal species, ensures consistent monitoring of animal health, care, and welfare, and supports investigators and Veterinary Services personnel. Ensures full compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations governing the care and use of laboratory animals owned by the LSU Health Sciences Center Shreveport at both on-site and off-site locations. In addition to supervisory responsibilities, the candidate will perform routine animal husbandry duties within their assigned work area. The candidate will support the Facility Manager in coordinating daily work assignments, verifying that all equipment is functioning properly, and ensuring that both micro-and macro-environments consistently meet or exceed the standards outlined in The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, 8th Edition (The Guide). The candidate may also be responsible for delivering both didactic and hands-on training to personnel, with a focus on AAALAC, International accreditation standards, and best practices for laboratory animal care as detailed in The Guide, in the regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, and established Animal Resources Standard Operating Procedures. 50% Management Supervises animal care technicians I, II, and Ill in the provision of daily husbandry care (cage changing) of animals in their assigned work areas to include: Assists the animal care technicians in daily health checks on the animals under their care in their assigned work areas. Supervises personnel on a day-to-day basis to ensure compliance with established Standard Operating Procedures and state and federal regulations. Evaluate daily work performed and provide on-the-spot corrective directions on an as needed basis to ensure compliance with established Standard Operating Procedures and all state and federal regulations. Supervises the animal care technicians to ensure those individuals have adequate numbers of clean animal cages to conduct cage "change outs" on the next work Supervises the sanitization of animal rooms, cages, animal use equipment, corridors, and support areas by using the appropriate techniques and sanitizing agents to promote animal health and welfare and comply with established Standard Operating Procedures and all state and federal regulations. Supervises the provision of nutrition for animals by supplying the correct feed and water for the species and psychological enrichment specific to each animal species needs in order to maintain the health and welfare of the animal and comply with established Standard Operating Procedures and all state and federal regulations. Supervises the housing of animals to ensure that the primary enclosure is appropriate for the animal species, size, and/or needs to contain them in comfortable and safe surroundings with regard to established Standard Operating Procedures and all state and federal Supervises and evaluates the monitoring of the micro- and macro-environments by obtaining, documenting, and comparing data against established standards to provide a physiologically appropriate environment for animals and personnel, and to comply with all established Standard Operating Procedures and all state and federal regulations.
