Provide support and assistance to the Shop Foreman by providing leadership, coordinating, overseeing, and addressing repairs to all YISD fleet vehicles. Supervise automotive technicians and other shop personnel. Act on behalf of the Shop Foreman or his designee on related department matters as authorized. Adhere to federal and state laws, as well as district policies, procedures, and regulations.

Essential Functions

  • Assist Automotive Technicians in the diagnostic and troubleshooting of various mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electronic problems.
  • Ensure the transportation bus fleet and motor coach fleet are properly maintained and serviced daily, and are ready for use.
  • Assist with the management inventory of parts, supplies, materials, and equipment as needed.
  • Assist with employee evaluations and the interview process for transportation personnel.
  • Maintain the mechanic shop in a clean, orderly, and safe manner free from hazardous conditions, in compliance with all health and safety regulations.
  • Assist other management staff with required training such as bus evacuation, wheelchair loading and unloading, and other professional development for the transportation staff. Demonstrate effective transportation practices and inspect equipment for safety, cleanliness, and serviceability. Promote safe working conditions/habits in assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Provide first response and complete necessary documentation on bus accidents after hours.
  • Act as a liaison between the Transportation Department and other YISD departments in regards to repairs to district vehicles. Represent the district during regulatory inspections and audits. Coordinate with Transportation Coordinators to ensure safety- related bus repairs are completed in a timely manner. Oversee the maintenance of the in-district Liquid Petroleum Gas fueling station for the proper disposal of regulated waste.
  • Assign the service work orders from the district web-based work order software system. Daily tasks include creating, assigning, documenting costs, ordering parts, closing work orders, analyzing data, and creating reports. Oversee the Preventative Maintenance inventory and schedules of buses.
  • Maintain data to provide technical reports to regulatory agencies; maintain necessary records and review for accuracy and completeness. Assign, review, and supervise work performed by shop personnel.
  • Ensure compliance with all environmental programs in alignment with district policies and procedures, federal, state and local laws and regulations to include Department of Transportation (DOT), Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), Hazardous Material (HAZMAT), etc. Ensure all mechanic staff is trained in appropriate training such as Personal Protection Equipment (PPE,) Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), Hazardous Composition (HAZCOM), and Liquid Petroleum Gas.
  • Provide required supervision or assistance during times of emergency. Serve as a contact to receive calls and coordinate with police, fire, security, and other applicable district departments at night, on weekends and holidays concerning emergency situations and take appropriate action.
  • Attendance at the work site is required to meet essential functions of the job.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED); possess a certificate of approved automotive mechanic training course, Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification, equivalent vocational training, military mechanic training, or documented experience; one (1) years' experience leading, supervising, coordinating, or mentoring mechanics or shop personnel preferred; three (3) years' experience maintaining and repairing fleet vehicles, heavy-duty trucks, buses, diesel engines, or equivalent equipment; must possess good working knowledge of methods, material, trades techniques, and equipment related to bus mechanical repair work. Must have a valid Texas or New Mexico driver's license and be able to obtain a Texas or New Mexico Non-Excepted Interstate Commerce Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class "A" or "B," within 90 to 120 days of employment. Ysleta ISD Transportation will assist with the "P" and "S" endorsements, which must be acquired within 60 days of obtaining a CDL. Must be able to complete required bus driver safety training. Must be insurable by the district's automobile liability insurance carrier and subject to the district's alcohol and drug testing policy. Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.

Must be able to lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to fifty (50) pounds frequently; work under all weather conditions; exposure to extreme temperatures, chemicals, and loud noises; be adaptable to work a shift schedule and/or hours other than regularly assigned; extended periods of walking, standing, bending, reaching, kneeling, stooping, heavy lifting, and carrying. Work outside and around moving objects or vehicles, ladders, or scaffolding.
