Projects may include new ground up construction, adaptive re-use build out construction, as well as renovation and/or expansion of existing facilities. Facility types primarily include out-patient clinics and ambulatory surgery centers, but may also include other project types to support our other business entities from time to time.

Purpose and Scope

Subject matter expert, exercising a diverse scope of architectural concepts and company objectives to achieve successful project development and creative effective issue resolution. Coordinates project activities and provides guidance to in-house architecture staff. Works closely with outside consulting architects, field project managers and in-house architectural staff providing guidance, direction and creative solutions on a wide range of concerns, including but not limited to design, site development, architectural standards, specifications, products, and building codes. Advocates for continuous design improvements by encouraging process improvements and implementation of best practices as appropriate.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Acts as subject matter expert (SME) in architecture.
  • Has wide-ranging experience, and uses professional concepts in all architecture issues.
  • Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.
  • Manages projects and problems of complex scope. Analyze, evaluate and interpret data exercising expert professional judgement in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
  • Provides expertise on wide-range of design and construction problems towards ensuring appropriate resolution.
  • Owns and leads the strategic development, execution and completion of assigned architectural construction and building projects. Determine appropriate and effective plan strategy and execution methods and procedures on new assignments.
  • Provide direction, expert guidance and oversight to assigned project architectural designers and architects. Coordinate activities of the in-house architectural design team staff allocating and monitoring the workflow to ensure the accurate and timely completion of assignments, quality standards are met ensuring design and technical competency, production efficiency, cost effectiveness and high level of customer service.
  • Work closely with internal and external contributing project staff and sub-contractors, and provide guidance for all architectural and mechanical and electrical engineering planning aspects of projects to ensure design quality and production efficiency.
  • Lead and contribute to project teams, execute construction drawings, specifications and contract documents and prepare cost estimates and review of construction change orders as required.
  • Consult and strategize with senior operations staff to determine functional and spatial requirements of projects, and prepare information regarding design, specifications, materials, color, equipment, estimated costs, and construction time.
  • Formulate strategy of layout of project that integrates engineering elements into unified design for client review and approval. Write and update specifications for architectural work.
  • Review and approve schematic (preliminary) plans, flow diagrams, layouts and designs created by project team.
  • Review architectural plans and specifications prepared by outside architect and engineer consultants for completeness and conformance with FMCNA standards and good design practice.
  • Prepare and research life cycle cost estimate for selection of materials, products and engineered systems.
  • Assist in the development and update of functional and spatial requirements for projects and technical requirements for mechanical and electrical systems and equipment.
  • Conduct product and building material evaluation and selection.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of architectural, mechanical and electrical design standards, details, specifications, policies, procedures and practices as it pertains to department scope.
  • Provide expert guidance to appropriate relative parties, including senior level management, on Building Codes, State DPH Regulations, AIA Guidelines and ADA Compliance as it applies to project.
  • Develop, maintain and review FMCNA design, space, specification, detail and construction document standards.
  • Participate in the development of "green standards" based on the Green Guide for Healthcare for all equipment and engineered systems, and materials used in construction processes.
  • Contribute to the development of a quality control program for external architects and engineers to follow in the creation of documents for projects.
  • Collaborate with various FMCNA senior operations staff, project managers, in-house architect staff, and outside senior level architects, engineers and developers in the overall development of assigned facility projects. Participate in strategic discussions in the development of new prototypes.
  • Conduct periodic on-site observation of work during construction to monitor compliance with plans.
  • Conduct post occupancy inspections with written reports for alternate product applications.
  • Conduct on-site investigations when a problem arises and to ensure company, Federal and State guidelines are followed.
  • Network with senior internal and external staff and associates in own area of expertise. Interact with senior operations management.
  • Work under limited supervision and may be asked to contribute to performance evaluations of other employees.
  • May provide assistance to junior level staff with more complex tasks that require a higher level of understanding of functions.
  • Mentor other staff as applicable.
  • Apply company policies and procedures to resolve issues; may escalate issues to supervisor/manager for resolution, as deemed necessary.
  • Assists with various projects as assigned by a direct supervisor.

Supervision:

  • None

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field required; Professional Degree of Architecture (5 year) preferred.
  • Architectural registration strongly preferred.
  • Certification of the AIA's Academy of Architecture for Health strongly preferred.

Experience and Required Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum 8 - 12 years' related experience; or Master's degree with minimum 6 years' related experience; or equivalent directly related work experience in architectural design with increasing responsibility.
  • Proven wide-range expertise, competencies and skills in with increasing responsibility in all facets of architectural design and methodologies, including strategic issue resolution, conceptual design, schematic design, drafting, preliminary planning, site development, construction document production, high level construction project management, and products and code research.
  • Comprehensive experience with building material application and life cycle methodologies.
  • Extensive knowledge of building codes and regulations.
  • Ability to successfully lead project teams.
  • Strategic and creative problem-solver with the ability to identify and make critical decisions on urgent, complex issues and problems in a timely manner.
  • Proficiency in computer software such as Microsoft Office products, AutoCAD and graphic design programs.
  • Detail and deadline oriented with excellent organizational, project management and multi-tasking skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of management.
  • Excellent communication skills - verbal and written.
