Job Description Summary

To provide leadership among the technical staff specifically for the cardiovascular service and operation. This position reports to the Cardiovascular Services Nurse manager and acts as a resource for the technical staff and Cardiovascular Services leadership. Responsible for Cardiac Cath Lab Second Operator schedule. In addition to the standard Technological duties, provides support and direction to fellow technologists, nurses and physicians with regard to supplies, equipment, scheduling, patient flow and communication within the unit.

Job Description

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1 - Unit Specific Clinical Competencies/Job Functions

   a - Demonstrates knowledge of the care of the patient undergoing elective and emergent cardiovascular invasive, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and their potential complications.
   b - Demonstrates the ability to care for the patient with continuous hemodynamic/cardiac monitoring including rhythm identification, interpretation of data and follow through with appropriate intervention as directed by MD/RN

   c - Demonstrates the ability to care for the patient with a temporary /permanent pacemaker / ICD or EP procedures including insertion, monitoring, and interpretation of rhythm and care of the catheter.

   d - Demonstrates the ability to care for the patient undergoing IABP insertion. Able to set up and monitor IABP. .

   e - Demonstrates knowledge of role in emergency situations and assists in emergency situations under direction of MD/RN

   f - Demonstrates understanding of relevant state mandated protocols and performs accurately Technologists task's associated with such.

   g - Demonstrates the ability to obtain an ACT, perform QC and follows actions described in policy.

   h - Demonstrates ability to interpret patient status information during procedures and informs MD/RN of status changes.

   i - Demonstrates ability to obtain EKG.

2 -EQUIPMENT

   a - Operates electronic equipment to properly monitor patients' heart rhythm and blood pressure during procedure.

   b - Is knowledgeable about and has the ability to operate complex and sophisticated equipment related to a Cardiac Catheterization/EP Laboratory.
   c - Prepares and assists MD with EP/ Vascular and coronary equipment

   d - Prepares and assists MD with cardiac Cath equipment such as IABP and Angiojet.

   e - Prepares and operates and maintains other Cardiac Cath/EP equipment according to policy /manufacturer recommendations to i.e., ACT machine, ablator

   f - Demonstrates thorough knowledge of location, care and operation of all Cath lab equipment. Able to trouble shoot and resolve simple equipment problems or notify appropriate resources for resolution.

3 - PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

   a - *Attends at least 5 CEU in specialty area each year.

   b - *Attends hospital sponsored training programs as required by department and by renewal date.

   c - Active participant in hospital committees.
   d - Active participant in unit based initiatives.

   e - Assumes overall responsibility for professional development by seeking and attending education opportunities.

   f - *Trains staff technologists and assists with training of all Cath Lab personnel and students.

   g - *Maintains current knowledge/certification/licensure.

4 - DOCUMENTATION

   a - Utilizes knowledge of A/P and cardiac procedures to document in Mac/Cardiac Lab appropriates and carefully.

   b - Demonstrates ability to interpret patient status information during procedure and informs MD/RN of status changes.

  

5 - QUALITY
   a - Maintains catheterization laboratory equipment in proper working condition.  Reports malfunctions and necessary repairs to Nurse Manager and Biomed.

   b - Maintains up-to-date quality control programs of all Cath/EP equipment.

   c - Insures proper calibration and maintenance of Cath/EP Lab equipment.

   d - Coordinates and maintains equipment maintenance prevention program.

6 - Coordinates and maintains equipment maintenance prevention program.

   a - *Verification of information and procedures performed are accurately transcribed in procedure log book and database.

   b - *Regularly reviews and reconciles database to maintain accuracy.

   c - *Assures correct billing of patient accounts at time of procedure and regularly reconciles patient billing.

   d - Maintains accuracy of log book and Mac Lab database.

7 - SUPPLIES

   a - Serves as Cath Lab liaison and contact for vendor representatives.

   b - Maintains stock inventory and initiates orders in collaboration with Materials Management and Supply Chain.

   c -   Works with manager to implement and monitor vendor discount programs.

   d – Reviews charges to ensure proper billing of all medical surgical items requiring charges.

   e - *Restocks as needed.

   f - Collaborates with Nurse Manager in continuous review of supply inventory and management to optimize performance to budget on supply expense. Collaborates on review of addition and deletion of equipment.

8 - Age & Culture

   c - Interacts with sensitivity in the delivery of care/services of diverse populations as needed.

   d - Effectively utilizes resources to provide care/services - such as, interpreter services and on-line sources.

9 - PERFORMS ALL RESPONSIBILITIES/duties required by the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.

   a - *Assures acquisition of images as directed by the Cardiologists.

   b - Cleanses equipment instruments before returning to central supply for re-sterilization.

   c - Takes call per unit-set rotation; prepares and responds as required.

10 - TECHNOLOGY
Embraces technological solutions to work processes and practices.

   a - *Utilizes systems to access email, learning management database and other resources as applicable to role.

   b - *Demonstrates competence in using all EPIC applications required by department and unit standards.

   c - *Demonstrates competence in using all GE application required by department and unit standards

   d - *Is able to access payroll and manage personal clocking’s.

11 - SAFETY
Fosters a "Culture of Safety" through personnel ownership and commitment to a safe environment.

   a - *Prior to the start of any invasive procedure, a final verification to confirm the correct patient, procedure, site, and information is done.

   b - .*Assesses each patient’s risk of falling throughout hospitalization using appropriate interventions to prevent falls.

   c - *Complies with the current CDC hand hygiene guidelines through proper handwashing including artificial nail restriction, as observed by nurse manager and peers.

   d - *Assures that alarms are activated with appropriate settings and are sufficiently audible.

   e - Ensures environment meets regulatory requirements at all times (ie: no cardboard boxes on floor, equipment cords are secured and plugged into foot of bed).

   f - Considers each patient's safety risk, including fall risk and takes appropriate action to eliminate or minimize risk according to hospital policy.

   g - Holds oneself and others accountable for meeting quality improvement/quality standards.

   h - *Understands individual roles and responsibilities in the event of hospital codes/emergency preparedness.

   i - *Specimens obtained are accurately labeled and delivered to appropriate department

   j - Makes appropriate use of personal protective equipment at all times.
   k. Utilizes the chain of command to report any potential or actual patient safety risks.
 

12 - RADIATION SAFETY

   a - Coordinates/attends annual radiation safety in-service class for departmental staff.

   b – Monitors and reports excessive skin exposure as required by policy.

   c - Assures data for monthly fluoroscopy use report is completed.

   d - Oversees the distribution and changing of film badges by RT.

13 - PROCEDURE DOCUMENTATION

   a - Captures all documentation required for all procedures in Mac/Cardio Lab according to unit standards.

   b - Captures all charges associated with procedures.

   c - Captures all equipment utilized for procedure.

   d - Assists MD with procedure reports.

14 - HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Manages human resources to assure quality services and promote positive employee relations.

   a - Interviews and recommends candidates for open staff positions.  Uses behavioral interviewing when hiring new staff.  Collaborates with Nurse Manager and staff to effectively screen candidates that meet both the culture and clinical criteria.

   b - CVT/RT performance appraisals are completed, performance based and submitted on time.

   c – Assists in the development of performance goals/objectives for each staff member to promote maximum productivity, proficiency and professional growth as evidenced by written goals on performance appraisals.

   d - Is recognized as a positive role model.

   e - Engages in positive recognition activities related to staff performance.

   f - Manages day to day work activities of technical staff.

   g - Responsible for CCL Second Operator schedule and performance.

  

15 - COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION

   a - Works with vendors and their representatives to introduce new technologies, programs, services and supplies in collaboration with Nurse Manager, Medical Director and other cardiologists.

   b - Works with IS staff to address issues around general and specialized IT equipment needs.

   c - Works with Biomed and hospital engineering to address hospital equipment issues and needs.

   d - Practices communication techniques, conflict resolution etc in interactions and facilitates usage of these techniques with staff and physicians.

UNIT / DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC JOB FUNCTIONS

1 - PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of on-going service programs, which assure quality patient care.

2 - Provides oversight to specialized EP/CCC equipment addressing elective/emergency service in addition to quality assurance testing and preventive maintenance in conjunction with Nurse Manager.

3 - Provides Nurse Manager and CV Service Line Director with information/data/reports as needed and requested.
4 - Assists Cardiovascular Data Specialist to facilitate regulatory reporting (ICD, registry, etc.).
5 - Provides Nurse Manager and CV Service Line Director with information/data/reports related to the programs within the timeframe established

6 - REGULATORY COMPLIANCE
Monitors/maintains unit compliance with regulatory, accrediting and Hospital policy for patient services, and environmental and personnel.

7 - Assists Nurse Manager with unit compliance with regulatory agencies' standards (i.e. OSHA, JCAHO, DPH, CAP, FDA).

8 - Assists Nurse Manager in monitoring and maintaining a safe environment.

9 - Assists Nurse Manager with monitoring the staff's understanding of and compliance with established emergency, infection control and universal precautions procedures.

10-Monitors unit specific equipment for safe use, as evidenced by up-to-date electrical checks, use of maintenance log and/or removal of unsafe equipment from the unit.

11-STAFF DEVELOPMENT
Assists with on-going development of staff and unit specific patient care programs.

12-Collaborates with Nurse Manager to plan for orientation of new techologists and unit specific education/in-service as needed.

13-Oversees orientation and/or orients new technologists. Ensures all checklists are completed and forwarded to appropriate Supervisor/Director.
14-Works with Nurse Manager to monitor staff compliance with mandatory educational activities.
15-Evaluates performance of staff CVT/RTs.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Education - Preferred

Graduate of approved program of radiological technology required

Minimum Work Experience

Minimum 3 years experience as a staff technologist.
Recent Cardiac Cath/EP lab leadership experience preferred.

Required Licenses / Registrations

ARRT (RT) - American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (Radiologic Technologist)
RT - MA - Radiologic Technologist (Massachusetts)
