Position Summary:The Lead Certified Phlebotomy Technician will perform venous and capillary blood collections on all ages of patients. The Aspirant will strive to improve the patient continuity of care by monitoring daily activities, troubleshooting, documenting problems and providing information for improvement. The Aspirant prepares all types of laboratory specimens for submission to a reference laboratory or for testing within the confines of the place of work; and may perform waived test procedures. Travel between clinics to train and set standards for assigned phlebotomists to follow strict protocols which ensure accuracy in the specimens collected, processed. Maintains weekly staff work schedule for assigned clinic locations.
Essential Functions of the Job:
Collect specimens according to current best practice by venous procedures (venipuncture) and capillary collection procedures (finger sticks) on adults and (heel sticks) on pediatric patients, observing strict principles of antisepsis to prevent infection in the patient or contamination of specimensServe as a resource to phlebotomy and patient service representativesOversee daily activity of phlebotomists and students with focus on safe patient carePerform waived testing under the direction of the laboratory supervisorPerforms quality control protocols as requiredProvides oversight, training, and leadership at assigned lab locations with daily operations in accordance with supervisor instructionsCapable of performing, teaching and monitoring new staff and external studentsReports concern unusual findings or observations from providers, nurses, and laboratory staff to lab supervisor and/or lab managerAdhere to policies and procedure established by San Ysidro Health
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist in eliminating waste and improving supply usageMonitoring daily quality controls for each in-house testReview and follow up on billing issues, and result matching issues (i.e. Quest, LabCorp and Sharp Lab trailers; Indigent Patient Program (IPP) accounts)Communicate effectively with others to accomplish goals and objectivesAble to multi-task, prioritize while still maintaining efficiency when circumstances dictate and willingly offer assistance to others when the need arisesOrder supplies and monitor inventoryMonitor and report productivityAttend meetings as required and participate in meetings and in-service meetingsMaintains established departmental policies and objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standardsMaintains and ensures cleanliness and good operation of associated work areas and equipmentAssist with gathering data for competency assessmentAssist in point of care training for various clinic personnelAdditional duties as assigned
Job RequirementsExperience Required:
Minimum 2 years experience working in a laboratory setting as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician
Education Required:
High School or equivalent
Certifications Required:
Phlebotomy Certification issued by the State of California Department of Health ServicesAmerican Heart Association Basic Life Saver (BLS) Card
Verbal and Written Skills Required to Perform the Job:
Must have excellent verbal and electronic communication and ability to communicate effectively in English
Technical Knowledge and Skills Required to Perform the Job:
Crisis ManagementBasic knowledge of Microsoft Office Apps, and quality control requirements
