Job Duties

Provides direct patient care and support to individuals in a behavioral health setting, assisting with activities of daily living such as personal care, meals, mobility, and other needs in accordance with the patient's treatment plan, unit routines, and established policies and procedures. Observes, records, and reports changes in patients' physical and behavioral condition, including vital signs, weight, ADLs, and other assigned clinical information, and uses therapeutic communication, appropriate professional boundaries, behavioral interventions, and Recovery Model principles when interacting with patients. Participates in the implementation of behavioral guidelines and provides patient observation, including 1:1 and special observation assignments, as required. Escorts patients to meals, other hospital departments, and approved activities outside the hospital while following established safety and security procedures.

Provides orientation and education to newly hired Nursing Assistants and serves as a resource and role model for staff in the Nursing Assistant role. Identifies and communicates training and performance needs to appropriate nursing staff, assists with staff education and learning activities, and supports audits of Nursing Assistant documentation. Coordinates communication between Nursing Assistants, treatment teams, and milieu committees to promote continuity of patient care.

Completes required documentation accurately and in a timely manner within the electronic medical record and follows procedures for searching, inventorying, labeling, and maintaining patient clothing and belongings. Assists with patient admissions, discharges, and transfers, participates in activities designed to improve patient care, completes required training and education, and maintains compliance with applicable hospital policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to provide direct patient care under supervision of licensed staff; ability to follow instructions and report observations of bio-psychosocial needs and behaviors to licensed nurse in timely manner; skills in providing direction and assistance to patients in activities of daily living; has knowledge of developmental and psychiatric disorders. Demonstrate competencies as defined on Competency Assessment.

Valid CNA license in the state of Virginia

Additional Considerations

  • Leadership skills demonstrated by experience and communication of abilities
  • Experience as a Nursing Assistant preferred
