Lead Custodian, High School

Job Title: Lead Custodian, High School Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt Reports to: Head Custodian, Custodian Supervisor Pay Grade: 504 Duty Days: 260 Dept./School: Assigned Campus Date Revised: 9/2026 Primary Purpose: Provides leadership, supervision, training and scheduling for the custodial employees assigned to his/her campus. Performs all tasks assigned by the principal and custodial supervisor. Handles any and all emergencies and routine cleaning tasks occurring daily. Qualifications: Minimum Education/Certification: Ability to read and understand instructions in English. High School Diploma or GED, preferred. Special Knowledge/Skills:

1. Must have a valid current Texas Driver's License.
2. Knowledge of basic techniques of minor repairs, building, and grounds maintenance.
3. Ability to operate and lift heavy equipment.
4. Knowledgeable with the safety precautions and handling of chemicals and cleaning supplies. Minimum Experience: Two years as a custodial worker. Experience and knowledge with stripping and waxing floors is preferred. Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually. Major Responsibilities and Duties: Align the assignment's major functions with district goals so that all students succeed.
5. Follow cleaning schedule and procedures to maintain the cleanliness of classrooms, offices, cafeterias, restrooms, hallways, multi-purpose rooms, gyms, locker rooms, and showers.
6. Maintain the cleanliness and safety of school buildings and grounds, to include: sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and playground areas.
7. Comply with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash.
8. Ensure all interior and exterior walk-off mats are clean daily.
9. Assists with cafeteria set up, to include: arranging tables and chairs for breakfast, lunch, and other campus events.
10. Move furniture or equipment within the building as directed by the Principal / Custodial Supervisor.
11. Ability to use a ladder safely, change ceiling tiles, and replace light bulbs that may be safely reached with an 8 FT ladder.
12. Assist with opening the school building each school day.
13. Responsible for employees following established procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities.
14. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, use of ladders, and operation of custodial equipment.
15. Correct unsafe conditions and report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to the Principal or Custodial Supervisor immediately.
16. Use the laundry washer and dryer to wash and dry mops and cleaning cloths.
17. Performs assigned cleaning duties.
18. Trains custodians on the proper use of cleaning supplies, equipment, and cleaning techniques.
19. Inspect building daily to determine that high standards of workmanship, safety, and cleanliness are maintained.
20. Confers with the Custodial Supervisor regarding custodial work schedules.
21. Confers with the building principal and Custodial Supervisor regarding campus events and takes necessary steps to support them.
22. Responsible for the cleanliness and organization of custodial cleaning closets and the proper storage of custodial equipment.
23. Maintains work schedules for custodial personnel assigned to his/her campus.
24. Change out light bulbs and fluorescent light tubes that can be reached with an 8-ft ladder.
25. Uses a computer to check emails 3 times daily, enter maintenance work orders, and enter campus facility requests to schedule custodial work schedules for floor maintenance.
26. Uses a computer to check for accuracy of assigned custodial personnel time sheets and coordinates with the Custodial Services Office to make corrections.
27. Submits monthly inventory and orders for custodial supplies needed in advance, allowing sufficient time for delivery, to ensure there are no interruptions in custodial performance, daily operations, and special events.
28. Maintains an inventory of campus custodial equipment and inspects equipment for proper operation, efficiency, and cleanliness.
29. Must maintain regular and reliable attendance.
30. Must be able to work longer hours and on weekends as needed.
31. Performs other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities: Provides daily supervision of the assigned evening custodial employees. Ensures employees are; following proper cleaning procedures, performing cleaning assignments, and wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE), following manufacture operating instructions for use of the equipment and cleaning supplies. Must be able to lift 50 pounds . Work in tiring and uncomfortable positions; around electrical power; outside and inside; on slippery or uneven walking surfaces, ladders, lifts, and scaffolding; and around machinery with moving parts. Exposure to hot and cold temperatures, excessive noise, dust, debris, fumes, and toxic chemicals.
