Job Description

MR. AIR NYC

Lead Ductless / Heat Pump Installer

Job type: Full-time

Work location: Based in Brooklyn, with field installations throughout New York City

Base pay: $40-$52 per hour, based on relevant experience, demonstrated competency, and leadership ability

About the Position

MR. AIR NYC is seeking an experienced Lead HVAC Installer to independently lead complex ductless mini-split, heat-pump, and related HVAC installations throughout New York City.

Our work includes residential and light-commercial projects in brownstones, townhouses, apartments, condominiums, co-ops, commercial spaces, and older NYC buildings. Projects may involve challenging equipment access, line-set routing, condensate management, masonry, finished interiors, roof access, electrical coordination, and occupied spaces.

This is a senior field position for an installer who can lead a crew, solve difficult jobsite conditions, maintain high workmanship standards, communicate professionally, and help develop less-experienced installers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead installation crews from jobsite arrival through system commissioning and customer handoff.
  • Review project scope, equipment, drawings, routing, access, materials, and job readiness before work begins.
  • Assign responsibilities based on crew members' skills and level of supervision required.
  • Identify conditions that differ from the approved scope and escalate significant design or project conflicts before making changes.
  • Install and supervise ductless mini-split, heat-pump, multi-zone, cassette, concealed-ducted, VRF, and related systems.
  • Install and verify refrigerant piping, flare preparation, torque practices, insulation, supports, and piping protection.
  • Perform or verify nitrogen pressure testing, evacuation, micron testing, startup, and commissioning.
  • Install and verify electrical and communication wiring within the scope of the HVAC installation.
  • Install and verify condensate piping, pumps, float switches, drains, and terminations.
  • Identify installation conditions that may create water-leak, drainage, access, or serviceability problems.
  • Maintain high workmanship standards for equipment placement, routing, supports, line-hide, penetrations, sealing, patching, cleanup, and property protection.
  • Verify proper system operation before completing each installation.
  • Complete required project documentation and photographs.
  • Communicate professionally with customers, office personnel, and other project stakeholders.
  • Maintain jobsite organization and follow company safety requirements.
  • Confirm that crews have the appropriate tools, ladders, materials, equipment, and access to perform work safely.
  • Stop and escalate work when a project is not ready or cannot be completed safely or according to approved requirements.

Crew Leadership and Training

  • Lead Installers are expected to help develop less-experienced field employees. Responsibilities include:
  • Demonstrating proper installation procedures.
  • Explaining why specific installation methods and standards are required.
  • Giving helpers and developing installers clear assignments.
  • Supervising appropriate hands-on work.
  • Inspecting work and providing constructive technical feedback.
  • Participating in competency evaluations and signoffs.
  • Helping develop future Assistant Leads and Lead Installers.
  • Participating in paid field-training sessions.
  • Communicating field problems constructively to sales, design, operations, and service personnel.
  • Raising safety, material, access, scope, and project-readiness concerns early.

Qualifications

  • Approximately 5+ years of HVAC installation experience strongly preferred.
  • Significant ductless mini-split and heat-pump installation experience.
  • Demonstrated experience independently leading HVAC installations.
  • EPA Section 608 certification appropriate to the work; Universal certification strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of refrigerant-piping and installation practices.
  • Experience with nitrogen pressure testing, evacuation, and micron-level verification.
  • Strong condensate and water-management practices.
  • Ability to read manufacturer installation instructions, equipment schedules, project plans, and technical documentation.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC electrical and control wiring.
  • Ability to identify field conditions that require escalation.
  • Experience directing helpers or developing installers.
  • Professional customer communication skills.
  • Ability to work safely in active residential and commercial environments throughout New York City.
  • Ability to communicate technical instructions, safety concerns, workmanship corrections, and jobsite information effectively with coworkers, customers, and office personnel.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with any of the following is especially valuable
  • Mitsubishi Electric, CITY MULTI/VRF, Fujitsu, or Daikin systems.
  • Multi-zone systems, branch boxes, ceiling cassettes, or concealed ducted systems.
  • Sheet-metal or duct-fabrication work.
  • Brownstone, townhouse, historic-building, or retrofit HVAC projects.
  • Difficult interior or exterior line-set routing.
  • Core drilling, masonry, carpentry, or finish work.
  • Condensate-pump and complex drainage systems.
  • Roof installations.
  • Training apprentices, helpers, or developing installers.
